Quick steps to pair Bluetooth headphones with your HP laptop

💡 Need to know
- Pairing mode comes first—Turning headphones on doesn’t always make them discoverable.
- Keep them close—A few feet from the laptop is ideal during the first connection.
- Already paired to your phone? They may reconnect there before the laptop gets a chance.
- Connected but still no music? Check the Windows sound output before pairing everything again.
You’re ready to jump into a meeting, playlist, or movie on your HP® laptop—preferably without sharing the audio with everyone nearby. Luckily, connecting Bluetooth® headphones only takes a few minutes once the headphones are in pairing mode.
At Asurion, we spend a lot of time helping people get devices that should work together actually talking to each other. Here’s how to pair Bluetooth headphones with your HP laptop and get the sound where you want it.
Pairing mode is the part people skip
Turning headphones on and putting them into pairing mode are often two different things.
The exact shortcut depends on the headphones. Many over-ear models use a long press on the Power or Bluetooth button until a light begins flashing or a voice says they’re ready to pair. Earbuds may use a button on the charging case or a touch-and-hold gesture.
If the headphones immediately reconnect to a phone or tablet, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that device.

Connect the headphones in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
- Open Devices.
- Select Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Select the headphones when they appear.
- Follow any prompts and finish the connection.
Some headphones also support Swift Pair. When they’re nearby and in pairing mode, Windows may simply pop up a notification asking whether you want to connect.
Connected doesn’t always mean selected
Sometimes Windows shows the headphones as connected while the laptop speakers keep doing all the work.
Open Settings > System > Sound and look under Output. Select the Bluetooth headphones, make sure they aren’t muted, and turn the volume up.
If that fixes it, the Bluetooth connection was fine. Windows was simply sending the audio somewhere else.
If the headphones never show up
Charge them, put them back into pairing mode, keep them close to the laptop, and make sure they aren’t connected to another phone or computer. Then turn Bluetooth off on the HP laptop, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
If the headphones appear in Windows but refuse to connect, remove the old pairing and add them again.
When the problem is the HP laptop, not the headphones
Try pairing another Bluetooth device—a mouse, speaker, or another set of headphones.
If that second device connects, the laptop’s Bluetooth radio is doing its job and the original headphones deserve more attention. If nothing connects, check Windows Update and HP Support Assistant for Bluetooth and wireless-driver updates.
