How to create an HP recovery USB—and when to use it

💡 Need to know

  • This isn’t a file backup—A recovery USB is meant to reinstall or restore the operating system.
  • The USB gets erased—Move anything important off the flash drive before creating recovery media.
  • Check model support first—HP Cloud Recovery isn’t available for every HP computer.
  • Back up the laptop too—Using recovery media can remove apps, settings, and personal data.

A recovery USB probably isn’t something most people think about while their HP® laptop is working normally. Its value shows up when Windows® isn’t working normally—especially when the computer can’t boot or its built-in recovery options aren’t getting you anywhere.

For supported HP laptops, HP Cloud Recovery Tool can create a bootable USB drive that reinstalls the recovery software and operating system originally provided for the computer. It’s a way to rebuild the laptop’s software when recovering from Windows itself isn’t an option. Just remember: a recovery USB isn’t a backup, so it won’t save personal files that weren’t backed up somewhere else.

When should you use an HP recovery USB?

We wouldn’t reach for recovery media because Windows is running slowly or one app keeps crashing. There are much less disruptive fixes for problems like those.

An HP recovery USB becomes useful when the laptop needs a deeper recovery, such as when:

  • Windows won’t start and the built-in recovery tools can’t fix it.
  • Windows Recovery Environment is missing, damaged, or inaccessible.
  • A reset or other Windows recovery option repeatedly fails.
  • The laptop has a new or replacement storage drive that doesn’t have Windows installed.
  • The operating system is badly corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
  • You need to restore the computer using HP’s recovery image.

If Windows still loads, start with Windows troubleshooting and recovery options such as Startup Repair, System Restore, or Reset this PC. Recovery media belongs farther down the troubleshooting list.

What does an HP recovery USB actually do?

Think of the USB as a way to start the recovery process outside the copy of Windows installed on the laptop.

Normally, the computer starts from its internal drive. When you boot from recovery media instead, the HP laptop starts from the USB and loads the recovery environment stored there. From that environment, you can reinstall the operating system and HP-provided software even when the Windows installation on the internal drive won’t boot properly.

That’s also why this is different from copying files onto a flash drive. The USB needs to be created as bootable recovery media using HP’s recovery software.

Know which HP recovery tool your laptop uses

Supported consumer PCs use HP Cloud Recovery Tool, while supported commercial or business systems may use HP Cloud Recovery Client. Not every HP laptop supports HP Cloud Recovery, so check the exact model before getting started.

You can create the recovery USB while the affected laptop still works, or—on supported models—use another Windows PC and provide the HP product information for the computer you need to recover.

One warning before plugging in a spare flash drive from the desk drawer: creating recovery media erases everything already stored on that USB. Move anything important somewhere else first.

Create the HP recovery USB

Once you’ve confirmed the HP model supports Cloud Recovery:

  1. Install HP Cloud Recovery Tool from Microsoft Store if it isn’t already available.
  2. Insert a blank USB flash drive that meets HP’s current size requirement.
  3. Search for HP Cloud Recovery Tool.
  4. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  5. Select Next on the welcome screen.
  6. Let the tool identify the HP computer, or enter the affected computer’s product information if you’re creating the USB from another PC.
  7. Select the correct USB flash drive.
  8. Review the warning that the drive will be erased.
  9. Confirm and let the tool download and create the recovery media.
  10. Select Finish when the process is complete.

If you’re making the USB ahead of time, label it and put it somewhere you’ll remember. A recovery drive is considerably less helpful when nobody remembers what’s on it six months later.

Before you use the recovery USB

This is the point where the stakes get higher. Depending on the recovery option used, reinstalling Windows can remove apps, settings, and personal files from the laptop.

Back up anything you can still access before continuing. If Windows starts normally enough to copy documents, photos, and other important files to cloud storage or an external drive, do that first.

Also make sure you know the passwords and account information you’ll need after recovery. You may essentially be setting the laptop up again when the process finishes.

Boot the HP laptop from the recovery USB

Instead of starting Windows from the internal drive, you now need to tell the HP laptop to start from the recovery USB.

  1. Connect the laptop to AC power.
  2. Insert the recovery USB directly into the laptop.
  3. Shut the computer down.
  4. Disconnect nonessential accessories and external drives.
  5. Turn the laptop on and immediately press F9 repeatedly to open the Boot Menu.
  6. Select the USB recovery drive.
  7. Press Enter.
  8. Follow the recovery prompts on screen.

Keep the laptop plugged in throughout recovery and don’t interrupt the process once it begins. The computer may restart several times along the way.

What if the hard drive or SSD has failed?

Recovery media fixes software problems; it doesn’t repair a physically failed drive.

If the HP laptop can’t detect its internal storage, the drive has failed diagnostics, or there are other signs of hardware failure, deal with that problem first. Once a working replacement drive is installed, the recovery USB may then be used to reinstall the operating system and rebuild the software environment.

That distinction is worth remembering: the recovery USB gives the laptop its software back. It can’t give a failed piece of hardware another life.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Does an HP recovery USB erase everything?

Creating the recovery USB erases everything already stored on the flash drive. Using it to recover the laptop may also erase personal files, apps, and settings depending on the recovery option you choose, so back up anything important first.

Can I create an HP recovery USB from another computer?

Yes, for supported HP® models. HP Cloud Recovery Tool can let you enter the product information for the laptop you need to recover and create the USB from another compatible Windows® PC.

Can I use the same HP recovery USB on another laptop?

Not necessarily. Recovery media is created for compatible HP models and their specific recovery images, so don’t assume one USB will work across different computers.

What's the difference between an HP recovery USB and a Windows recovery drive?

An HP recovery USB uses HP’s recovery image to reinstall Windows along with HP-provided software and drivers for a supported model. A Windows recovery drive is created with Microsoft’s recovery tools and is meant to help troubleshoot or reinstall Windows.
