Do waterproof phone bags really work?

💡 Need to know

  • Water-resistant isn't waterproof: Your phone can survive splashes, but pools, lakes, and the ocean are a different story.
  • A waterproof pouch is only as good as its seal: One tiny gap can let enough water in to ruin your day—and your phone.
  • Pouches don't last forever: Sun, saltwater, and everyday wear can weaken the material over time, so replace old ones before your next trip.
  • Test it before you trust it: A quick paper towel test takes a few minutes and can save you from an expensive surprise.

Whether you’re headed to the pool, a water park, or the beach, the water poses risks to your phone. Even water-resistant phones have limits, and no one wants to deal with a damaged phone when they’re trying to have fun in the sun.

A waterproof phone bag for swimming sounds like the perfect solution. Your phone is safe and yet accessible by the water. But do these bags actually work?

Asurion Experts have seen it all when it comes to water-damaged devices. We’re here to help you summerproof your phone so you can enjoy a swim without worries. Let’s break down whether putting your phone in a waterproof bag is the best approach.

The reliability of waterproof phone pouches

A waterproof phone pouch for swimming is basically a strong plastic bag designed to keep water out. The watertight locks snap tightly to seal the opening where you insert your phone, preventing water from getting in.

These pouches are not all created equal, though. While shopping, you may notice that waterproof phone cases for pool time have different ratings. IPX8, for example, is the highest rating for water protection. It means that the case has been tested and can be continuously submerged beyond 1 meter deep without letting water seep in.

However, even an IPX8 rating does not always guarantee your phone's safety. Waterproof pouches may fail, especially due to improper sealing or wear and tear on the plastic.

Expect your waterproof pouch to last around 18 months to two years if you’re using it regularly. After that, you may want to replace it to keep your phone safe in the summer.

Why you need a bag even if your phone is water-resistant

Many modern smartphones are water-resistant, but that's different from waterproof, which means 100% protected from water damage. A water-resistant phone may be fine if it's out in the rain or a wave splashes on it, but it may not last being fully submerged or constantly exposed to water.

A water-resistant phone relies on delicate internal rubber seals and adhesives to keep the internal components safe from water getting in. As the seals age or get exposed to things like chlorine and saltwater, they degrade and fail to offer the same level of water-resistant protection as when your phone was new. With reckless exposure to wetness, there may be unseen damage to your phone, making it lose its water resistance over time.

The best way to protect your phone from water is to prevent it from getting wet in the first place. The small seals inside your phone won’t be put to the test if your phone is tucked in a waterproof pouch.

Note that even if you have an IP68 case, there are still limitations. Your phone won’t be truly waterproof, just water-resistant. Prolonged submersion could cause leaks and damage, so be careful to summerproof your tech before you go to the beach.

How to get the most out of your waterproof pouch

With a waterproof phone bag, you can even take photos underwater. But before you stick your phone in a pouch and jump in the sea with it, take some extra steps to keep it safe:

  • Read the packaging to see how deep you can safely take the pouch in water.
  • Check the plastic of the pouch for any wear and tear or damage.
  • Double-check the seal on the pouch.
  • Prevent condensation by keeping your phone cool and getting as much air out of the pouch as possible before sealing it.
  • Turn your phone brightness up so the screen is easier to read through the glare of the plastic in the sun.

To make sure your bag is working, perform a water phone pouch paper towel test. Put a dry paper towel in your pouch and seal it. Submerge the sealed pouch in water for a few minutes, then take the paper towel out. If the towel is wet at all, the pouch won’t fully protect your phone.

Any punctures, worn seams, or damaged closures on the pouch could be how water is getting in. You can try to fix the pouch, but at that point you’re generally better off buying a replacement. A damaged waterproof pouch cannot offer the advertised level of water protection for your phone.

FAQ

Do waterproof phone pouches actually work?

Yes—when they're high quality, properly sealed, and in good condition. A damaged or poorly sealed pouch can still let water in.

Can I take underwater photos with a waterproof phone pouch?

Usually, yes. Many waterproof pouches are designed to let you use your touchscreen and camera underwater, as long as you stay within the pouch's depth rating.

How often should I replace a waterproof phone pouch?

If you use it regularly, replacing it every 18 months to two years is a good rule of thumb. Replace it sooner if you notice cracks, worn seams, or a damaged seal.

If my phone is water-resistant, do I still need a waterproof pouch?

Yes. Water resistance wears down over time, and it isn't designed for prolonged submersion or repeated exposure to chlorinated or salt water.

How can I tell if my waterproof pouch still works?

Before using it with your phone, seal a dry paper towel inside and submerge the pouch for a few minutes. If the towel stays dry, the seal is likely still doing its job.
