File Explorer not responding in Windows 11? Try these fixes

⚡ Fast fix

  • Reboot for relief. Restarting your computer clears temporary File Explorer glitches.
  • Check for updates. Microsoft® frequently releases patches to fix bugs that affect File Explorer.
  • Exit File Explorer. Use Task Manager to safely close File Explorer, then try it again.

You open File Explorer to grab a document, move a file, or check a drive, and instead you get a blank window—or the dreaded “Not responding” message. Not exactly helpful when the file you need is sitting somewhere behind that frozen screen.

At Asurion, our experts know their way around Windows™ 11 issues, from a blue screen of death to other common Windows 11 issues. Here’s how to get File Explorer responding again without restarting the whole PC every time it acts up.

Why is File Explorer not responding in Windows 11?

If Windows Explorer has stopped responding, it's usually driven by a specific process, not a system issue. Problematic updates, corrupted files, or a bad driver file can cause it to malfunction. So can a damaged File Explorer cache or a storage error.

Fortunately, these issues are usually fixable with a few simple tweaks. So, stop looking for your next computer and let's get down to repairing the one you already have!

Restart Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer manages File Explorer, along with other processes. If Win Explorer is not responding, you'll probably experience problems with your files, too.

To fix the issue, try restarting Windows Explorer from Task Manager. Take these steps:

  1. Press and hold the CTRL + ALT + Deletekeys.
  2. Click Task Manager.
  3. Right-click Windows Explorer on the Processes tab.
  4. ClickRestart.

Wait for Windows Explorer to reload before trying to access File Explorer.

Clear File Explorer's history and cache

A corrupted search history can lead to Windows File Explorer not responding. To delete your history, follow these tips:

  1. Click the Start menu > Control Panel. If it isn't visible, type "Control Panel" in the search bar.
  2. Type "File Explorer Options" in the search bar. Click File Explorer Options when it appears.
  3. Click the General tab. Locate Clear File Explorer history.
  4. Tap Clear.

Don’t ditch it, fix it

No matter the issue, our experts can repair your devices fast. Make an appointment or visit your local uBreakiFix by Asurion today.

Run a system file scan

A system file scan checks for system errors caused by corrupted files and replaces them with a copy from the cache. This may resolve a Windows 11 Explorer not responding issue. Here's how to run the scan:

  1. Click Start menu > Command Prompt. Type "Command Prompt" in the search bar if it's not listed.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
  3. Type "sfc /scannow" and press Enter.
  4. Wait for the scan to finish.

If the scan identifies corrupt files but can't fix them, check for an available Windows Update. There may be a pending resolution to the corrupt file.

Check your drive for errors

A CHKDSK scan hunts for storage errors in your computer's hard disks. If it finds one, it will alert you to the problem and attempt to fix it. Fair warning: CHKDSK scans are a bit more technical than the other fixes, so if you don't feel comfortable running one, get help from a qualified PC expert like those at your nearby
uBreakiFix® by Asurion store
. To run the scan, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start menu > Command Prompt. Type "Command Prompt" in the search bar if it's not listed.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator.
  3. Type "CHKDSK /f" and press Enter.
  4. Wait for the scan to finish.

Reset your user profile as a last resort

If you've tried everything and Windows Explorer is not responding, it's time for a last resort fix: creating a new user profile. This option allows you to copy your files to a new profile you'll use going forward. Here's how to set it up:

  1. Open Settings. Click Accounts > Other users > Add account.
  2. Enter the email address associated with your Microsoft account and follow the prompts.
  3. Sign in to your new account on your computer.
  4. Type "This PC" into the Windows search bar and click on it.
  5. Tap C: drive > Users.
  6. Copy the file associated with your old username and paste it into the folder with your new username. Wait for the process to finish before restarting your computer and logging into your new account.

If you still experience issues with File Explorer, consider resetting your Windows PC from scratch.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
