How to find your IMEI number

How to use IMEI to check if your iPhone is unlocked

Fast fix

  1. On your iPhone® or Android™ phone, enter *#06# on your keypad.
  2. The 15-digit IMEI number should appear on your screen.

Every mobile phone comes with a unique, 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number that’s permanently connected to your device. Think of it as your phone’s fingerprint. But how do you find it? We’ll show you.

At Asurion, we help people with their daily tech needs, whether you want to activate an eSIM on your iPhone or find your lost Android™ phone. Here’s our guide on how to find your IMEI number.

Why would you need to find your IMEI number?

Here are some reasons you’d need to know your IMEI number:

Security. Asurion Experts report that 4 million phones were lost or stolen in 2023—that’s almost 11,000 phones every day. If you lose your phone or it’s stolen, knowing and reporting the IMEI number to your carrier can help protect your device by blocking access to itsmobile network. That way, thieves can’t use it.

Buying and selling. If you buy a used phone, you’ll want to check the IMEI number on the device to make sure the device isn’t stolen. Expect buyers to do the same if they buy from you.

Device support. When you need technical support, sharing your IMEI with tech experts gives them more detailed information about your device while troubleshooting.

Claims and warranties. You’ll need the IMEI for your device to file claims or check warranty status. When you send in your device for repair, the IMEI provided in the claim must match the IMEI of the device being repaired to be covered.

How to find your IMEI number

The IMEI number is typically printed inside the battery compartment of your iPhone or Android device, but you’d have to take your phone apart, potentially voiding the warranty, to see it this way. Here are a few easier ways to find your IMEI number:

Find your IMEI number by dialing a code

  1. On your iPhone or Android phone, enter  *#06# on your keypad.
  2. The 15-digit IMEI number should appear on your screen.

Use settings to find your IMEI number

Android:

Open Settings > About phone > Status and look for the IMEI number. You may need to tap IMEI information to get the number.

On some Android models, open Settings > General > About device > Status.

iPhone:

Open Settings > General > About, then scroll down to see the IMEI number.

How do you find your IMEI number without your phone?

You can still find the IMEI number even if your phone isn’t with you. Here’s how:

Find your IMEI number on the box

If you still have the box your phone came in, look for the IMEI number on a label on the outside of the box.

Find your IMEI number online

Android:

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com/dashboard and sign into your Google account.
  2. Click on Find My Device to see the devices linked to your dashboard.
  3. Click the information icon (“i”) next to your device to see your IMEI number.

iPhone

  1. Head to appleid.com and sign in with your Apple account credentials.
  2. Select Devices. Then, choose the device from the list to see the IMEI number.

Check your carrier account

You can also check your carrier account to find your IMEI number if you don't have your device.
