You turn your Fire™ tablet sideways to watch a video or get a little more room on the screen, but the display stays stubbornly upright. So you turn it back. Then sideways again. Maybe give it a little shake for good measure. Still portrait.

Check Rotation Lock first

Rotation Lock is easy to turn on accidentally, and when it's enabled, the tablet is doing exactly what you've told it to do—even if that's no longer what you want.

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and look for the rotation control. If Rotation Lock is on, turn it off, then rotate the tablet again. Give the screen a second to catch up. It doesn't always flip the instant the tablet moves.

See whether another app rotates

If the setting looks right, open an app you know normally works in both portrait and landscape and turn the tablet sideways.

This comparison helps narrow things down quickly:

• Other apps rotate normally: The original app or screen probably doesn't support that orientation.
• Nothing rotates: Keep troubleshooting the tablet.
• Rotation works sometimes: Restarting Fire OS is worth trying next.

Home screens, games, reading apps, and video apps don't all handle orientation the same way, so one stubborn screen isn't enough to blame the tablet.

Restart the Fire tablet

When rotation used to work and suddenly stops across multiple apps, restart the tablet before changing anything else. Hold the power button and choose Restart, then test the screen again once Fire OS has fully loaded.

If a temporary software process was keeping the orientation sensor from responding correctly, this may be all it takes.

Take the case off for a minute

This isn't the first thing we'd suspect, but it's an easy test if the problem started after adding or changing a case.

Remove it, rotate the tablet through portrait and landscape a few times, and see whether anything changes. A poorly fitting case can interfere with buttons or how the tablet sits in your hands, and magnetic accessories can sometimes cause unexpected behavior.

If nothing changes, put the case back on and move along. No need to make it the villain without evidence.

Check for a Fire OS update

If rotation remains stuck across multiple apps after a restart, make sure Fire OS is current.

Open Settings > Device Options > System Updates and install anything available. Keep the tablet connected to power and Wi-Fi while the update finishes, then try rotating the screen again.

When the orientation sensor may be the problem

A tablet that refuses to rotate anywhere despite having Rotation Lock off, current software, and a fresh restart starts to point away from settings.

That's especially true if the problem appeared after a hard drop or other physical damage. At that point, we'd stop toggling the same setting and have the tablet checked by a repair expert.
