There's something especially confusing about putting an SD card into a Fire™ tablet and having the tablet completely ignore it. It's right there. You know it's right there. Fire OS apparently has other ideas.

At Asurion, our experts have seen it all—and can fix it all. Before replacing the card or formatting anything, here's how we'd figure out what's going on.

Remove the card and try again

Start with the physical connection. Turn off the Fire tablet, remove the microSD card, and check that it's sitting correctly in the tray or slot before inserting it again.

While it's out, take a quick look at the card. If it's cracked, bent, or the contacts look damaged, software troubleshooting isn't going to do much for it. Then turn the tablet back on and give Fire OS a moment to recognize the card.

See whether the card works somewhere else

If the Fire tablet still doesn't see it, another device can answer a useful question pretty quickly.

Try the microSD card in a compatible computer, card reader, or another device. If it isn't recognized there either, we'd be much more suspicious of the card itself. If it works normally elsewhere, keep your attention on the Fire tablet.

This is also a good time to back up anything important from the card while you still can.

Make sure the card is compatible

Not every microSD card will necessarily work with every Fire tablet. Supported storage capacities can vary by model, so check the specifications for your exact Fire tablet before assuming a high-capacity card should work.

This matters especially if the tablet recognizes a smaller card but ignores the new one. That's a much stronger clue than repeatedly reinserting the same card.

Check whether Fire OS sees the storage

Sometimes the card is recognized even though it isn't showing up where you expected. Open Settings > Storage and look for the microSD card. If it's listed there, the tablet can see it and the problem may instead be how the card is configured or where an app is saving content.

Be careful before formatting the card

If Fire OS recognizes the card but says it needs to be formatted, stop for a second if there's anything on it you want to keep. Formatting erases the card.

Back up important files to another device first, then follow the Fire tablet's prompts to format the card. Once that's finished, check Settings > Storage again and make sure the available space appears correctly.

Check for a Fire OS update

A card that works perfectly in another device but still won't appear on the Fire tablet is worth testing again after a software update.

Open Settings > Device Options > System Updates and install anything available. Restart the tablet afterward, then reinsert the microSD card and check Storage again.

Try another compatible microSD card

At this point, swapping cards tells us more than repeating the same troubleshooting.

If another compatible microSD card appears immediately, the original card is likely the problem. If the Fire tablet refuses to recognize either one, the card slot or tablet itself becomes more suspicious.

That's where we'd stop formatting, resetting, and reinserting things. A damaged card reader isn't something another trip through Settings will fix.
