Fire TV remote blinking orange? How to pair it again

⚡ Fast fix

  • Orange usually means pairing—The remote is trying to connect to Fire TV.
  • Start with fresh batteries—Weak batteries can interrupt the pairing process.
  • Hold Home for about 10 seconds—Stay close to Fire TV while it reconnects.
  • Still blinking orange?
Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.

An Amazon® Fire TV™ remote that keeps blinking orange is at least giving you a clue. In most cases, that light means the remote is in pairing or discovery mode and hasn’t finished connecting to Fire TV.

Asurion Experts help people troubleshoot streaming devices every day, and pairing problems usually don’t call for resetting the whole Fire TV. Start with the remote and work outward from there.

Give pairing a clean restart

Put in a fresh pair of matching batteries, then restart Fire TV. Unplug the Fire TV device from power for about a minute, reconnect it, and wait until the home or setup screen appears.

Now stand near the Fire TV and press and hold Home on the remote for about 10 seconds. Give it a moment to connect before pressing other buttons.

If the remote starts working and the orange flashing stops, you’re done. If it immediately goes back to blinking orange, the pairing hasn’t completed yet.

Our guide to fixing a Fire TV remote that won’t work covers the broader battery, pairing, and remote checks if there are other symptoms too.

If you can navigate with your phone, add the remote again

The Amazon Fire TV app can work as a temporary remote as long as the phone and Fire TV are already on the same Wi-Fi network.

Once the app is connected, open Fire TV’s remote settings and add the physical remote again. The exact wording can vary by Fire TV version, but look under Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote. Put the physical remote into pairing mode by holding Home while Fire TV searches for it.

If the remote appears and connects this way, there’s no reason to reset anything else.

Reset the remote only if pairing still fails

Resetting the remote clears its saved pairing so it can make a fresh connection. It does not erase Fire TV apps, streaming accounts, or Fire TV settings.

For many current Alexa Voice Remotes:

  1. Unplug Fire TV from power.
  2. Press and hold Left, Menu, and Back together for about 12 seconds.
  3. Release the buttons and remove the remote batteries.
  4. Reconnect Fire TV to power and let it start.
  5. Put the batteries back in the remote.
  6. Press Home.
  7. If it doesn’t pair automatically, hold Home for about 10 seconds.

A blue indicator on supported remotes can confirm a successful pairing. Button combinations can vary on some older or specialized remotes, so use the instructions for the exact model if this sequence doesn’t match yours.

If the orange light keeps coming back

Pay attention to what happens after pairing.

If fresh batteries and a remote reset get it connected but the remote drops out again later, pairing may be only part of the problem. Distance, interference, weak batteries, or the remote itself can make the connection unreliable.

If the Fire TV app controls the device normally while the physical remote repeatedly falls back into pairing mode, that’s a strong reason to keep the troubleshooting focused on the remote. And if its batteries are also draining unusually fast, our article on Fire TV remote battery drain can help with that pattern.

A factory reset of the entire Fire TV would be a much bigger move and isn’t the next logical step for one remote that won’t stay paired.

FAQ

What does a blinking orange light on a Fire TV remote mean?

How do I pair my Fire TV remote again?

Restart Fire TV, stay nearby, then hold Home on the remote for about 10 seconds.

Why does my Fire TV remote keep flashing orange after I hold Home?

The pairing may not be completing. Try fresh batteries and a Fire TV restart, then reset the remote if pairing still fails.

Should I reset a Fire TV remote that’s blinking orange?

Not first. Re-pair it with Home and restart Fire TV before resetting the remote.
