How to connect a keyboard to your iPad

The Apple® iPad® offers unbeatable flexibility. It's lightweight and portable, which is perfect for consuming or creating content on the go. And when you connect a keyboard with the iPad, you can use it to write emails, work on documents, and take notes—just as you would a regular laptop.

Asurion Experts help you get the most from your tech. Whether you're curious about iPad keyboard shortcuts or your iPad keyboard won't work, count on us for straightforward answers. Here's how to connect a keyboard to an iPad so you can unlock its laptop capabilities.

Check if your keyboard is compatible

Apple began releasing specially designed keyboards for its iPad lineup in 2015. There are six versions designed to work with specific iPad models. However, if you don't own an Apple keyboard, you can still connect your device using a Bluetooth®-enabled wireless keyboard. Wired keyboards also work, but you may need a special adapter designed for Lightning® or USB-C ports.

Use this reference chart to check your iPad's compatibility with Apple keyboards and its input port type.

How to connect a Bluetooth keyboard to your iPad

To connect a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard to your iPad:

  1. Make sure your keyboard is fully charged.
  2. Turn on your keyboard and place it in pairing mode.
  3. On your iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, then toggle Bluetooth on.
  4. Under "Other Devices," tap the name of your keyboard.
  5. If prompted, enter the pairing code on your keyboard.

You’ll see a message that says the device is connected.

How to connect a wired keyboard to your iPad

Connecting a wired keyboard depends on the connector type.

  • If your iPad has a USB-C port: You can connect directly using a USB-C keyboard.
  • If your iPad has a Lightning port: Use a Lightning-to-USB adapter or a Lightning-compatible keyboard.

Once connected, your iPad should detect the keyboard automatically—no setup needed.

FAQ

Can I use a third-party keyboard with my iPad?

Yes. You can use most wired or Bluetooth-enabled keyboards with your iPad, even if they’re not made by Apple.

Why won’t my iPad recognize my keyboard?

Make sure the keyboard is charged or powered, and confirm it’s compatible with your iPad model and connector type. If using Bluetooth, try unpairing and reconnecting the device.

Does an iPad keyboard need to be charged?

Yes, Bluetooth keyboards need to be charged or have working batteries. Wired keyboards draw power from your iPad.

Do I need an adapter to use a wired keyboard?

If your keyboard uses USB-A and your iPad only has Lightning or USB-C, you’ll need a compatible adapter.
