How to connect your Ring Doorbell to Alexa

💡 Need to know

  • Enable the Ring Skill in the Alexa app before trying to discover your new devices.
  • Turn on Doorbell Announcements so your Echo speakers act as your indoor chime.
  • Live view works best on Echo Show devices with a simple "Alexa, show the front door" command.
  • Devices won't talk?
Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.

Are you getting the most out of your smart home devices? Having a Ring® Video Doorbell is great for playing back recordings of every visitor or package drop-off, but it’s limited to the Ring app. If you have an Amazon Echo® Show smart device, you can create your very own front door intercom system with hands-free video and audio.

More gadgets, fewer problems. Asurion tech care covers all your family's devices, from gaming consoles to smart devices—including your video doorbell. Here’s how to connect your Ring Video Doorbell to your Alexa™ device, so you can manage your home security efficiently from anywhere in your house.

Why connect your Ring Video Doorbell to your Alexa?

Before you begin, it’s important to understand how the Ring Video Doorbell and Amazon™ Alexa can work together to create a more responsive and interactive home security system. This integration allows you to access live video feeds, communicate with visitors, and receive motion alerts directly through your Alexa-enabled devices—no more reaching for your phone when the doorbell rings.

Don’t have an Amazon Echo Show? You can still get front door announcements or talk to the front door while you’re in range of an Alexa speaker. Ring devices are compatible with most Alexa-enabled smart devices, like the Echo Spot®, Echo Dot®, both the standard Fire TV® Stick and Fire TV® Stick 4K, Fire TV® (version 2 and above), Fire TV® Cube, and Fire tablets (version 7 and above).

Will Alexa work with your Ring Video Doorbell?

Yes, Alexa is compatible with all versions of Ring Video Doorbells. Linking your Ring Video Doorbell with Alexa enhances your smart home by providing hands-free control and instant access to your doorbell's video feed.

How to connect your Ring Video Doorbell to Alexa

Getting your Ring Video Doorbell working with Alexa is quick—as long as both devices are online and updated. Once connected, you can get motion announcements, see live video on an Echo Show, and even talk to visitors hands-free. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  2. Tap More (bottom right).
  3. Tap Skills & Games.
  4. Search for Ring and select the official Ring skill.
  5. Tap Enable to Use.
  6. Sign in to your Ring account to link it.

After linking your accounts, tap Discover Devices, or simply say, “Alexa, discover my devices.” Within about 30 seconds, your Ring doorbell should appear in the Alexa app.

From there, you can:

  • Assign it to a room
  • Turn on doorbell press announcements
  • Enable motion alerts
  • View live video on compatible Echo Show or Fire TV devices

To test everything, try saying “Alexa, show me the front door.” If the live feed loads, you’re good to go.

Troubleshooting tips

If you encounter any issues during the setup, such as Alexa not finding your Ring device or connectivity problems, try these steps:

  • Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Restart your Echo device and Ring® Video Doorbell.
  • Disable and re-enable the Ring skill in the Alexa app.
  • Check for any interference from other devices that could affect the Wi-Fi connection.

FAQ

Why isn’t my Ring doorbell showing up in Alexa?

Most of the time, the Ring skill isn’t enabled or the accounts aren’t properly linked. Disable the Ring skill in the Alexa app, then enable it again and rediscover devices.

Why did my Ring stop working with Alexa?

This usually happens after a password change or account update. If you recently changed your Ring or Amazon login, you may need to relink the accounts.

Can Alexa announce when someone rings my Ring doorbell?

Yes. In the Alexa app, enable Doorbell Press Announcements for your device. Once turned on, your Echo will announce when someone presses the button.

Why isn’t Alexa announcing Ring motion alerts?

Make sure motion announcements are enabled in the Alexa app under your Ring device settings. Also confirm motion detection is turned on in the Ring app itself.
