Slow ice maker? Here's how to speed it up

Slow ice maker

A slow ice maker can be a major inconvenience, especially when you're hosting friends or family—and you may be wondering whether it's a sign of a bigger issue. The good news is that it's probably an easy fix. Here are our best tips on how to adjust your ice maker to make more ice.

How does an ice maker work?

Here’s how the ice maker in your fridge keeps the ice cubes coming:

  • When you turn on the ice maker, it draws in water from your home’s water supply.
  • The water moves into a mold, where it freezes into ice cubes.
  • Once the water is frozen, a heating element warms the mold just enough to loosen the ice cubes, which are then ejected into a storage container.
  • The ice maker repeats this cycle until the storage bin is full.

Why is my ice maker so slow?

There are several reasons your ice maker may have slowed down. Here are some of the most common:

  • Temperature settings. If your freezer temperature is set too high, the ice maker will take longer to make ice. Ideally, your freezer should be set to around 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Water supply issues. Low water pressure or a clogged water filter can restrict water flow, slowing down the ice-making process.
  • Dirty components. Over time, mineral deposits and debris can build up in the water lines or ice mold, which can prevent the ice maker from working properly. Faulty parts. A malfunctioning thermostat or sensor will cause your ice maker to slow.
  • Defective ice maker. Your ice maker may need to be repaired or replaced.

Check the temperature settings

Make sure your freezer is set to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If it’s too hot or too cold, your ice maker may struggle to make ice.

Inspect the water supply

Check the water pressure in your ice maker, and replace the water filter at least every six months.

Clean your ice maker

Clean the ice mold and water lines twice a year to remove any mineral deposits or debris. Need help? Check out our guide on how to clean a refrigerator water line.

Check the components

Inspect the thermostat and sensors. If you see damage, you may need to replace the parts.
