How to use Android recovery mode to fix common phone issues

💡 Need to know

  • Recovery Mode is your phone's repair toolkit: It can fix stubborn software problems without opening up the device.
  • Not every option is safe to tap: Commands like Wipe data/factory reset erase everything on your phone, so choose carefully.
  • Most fixes don't delete your data: Restarting your phone or wiping the cache partition won't remove your personal files.
  • Back up before you go exploring: If you think a factory reset might be necessary, save your photos and other important data first.

Lately, you've had some technical issues with your Android™ smartphone. Apps shut down suddenly, updates don't download properly, and sometimes the interface doesn't respond to your input. Is it time to try Android recovery mode?

Asurion Experts help you get the most out of your tech. Whether you're wondering how to use Factory Reset Protection or you're searching for a Samsung® tablet reset guide, count on us for answers you can trust. Learn how to use Android recovery mode in our no-fuss guide.

How to enter recovery mode on your Android device

Putting your Android phone or tablet in recovery mode allows you to access tools that diagnose and repair system-level problems. It's frequently used to perform factory resets, install updates, and reboot an unresponsive device.

The process to enter recovery mode varies slightly by device manufacturer. Take these steps:

  1. Power off your device.
  2. Boot your phone into recovery mode.
    • Google Pixel: Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until "Start" appears at the top of your screen.
    • Samsung: Press and hold the Power/Home and Volume Up buttons until you see the Samsung logo.
    • LG: Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the System Recovery menu.
    • Motorola: Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the Fast Boot menu.
    • OnePlus: Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until you see the Recovery Mode menu.
  3. Navigate to the recovery mode menu and select an option.
    • Google Pixel: Use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to choose Recovery Mode. Press Power to select it and wait for the Google logo to appear.
    • Samsung: Use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to navigate the recovery mode menu.
    • LG: Use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to navigate the recovery mode menu.
    • Motorola: Press the Volume Down button to highlight Recovery Mode. Press the Power button to select it.
    • OnePlus: Tap your language. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to navigate the recovery mode menu options.

Navigation and common recovery mode commands

The Android recovery mode menu includes a list of options to troubleshoot and fix issues. Available commands you may see include:

  • Reboot system now: This option reboots your phone to its normal operating state. It's a solid first choice for fixing a phone stuck on a white screen or boot loop.
  • Wipe data/factory reset: Use this command if you want to erase your phone's data and restore it to its factory state.
  • Wipe cache partition: Try clearing the cache partition if your apps frequently crash.
  • Run graphics test: This option checks your device for display errors. Use it if your display is blurry or doesn't show images correctly.
  • Repair apps: This tool helps repair corrupted apps installed on your phone. It's generally only available on older Samsung devices.
  • Apply update from SD card: If you've saved an Android update to an SD card, you can use this option to install it on your smartphone.
  • View recovery logs: This command shows you a list of previous actions you've taken in recovery mode. It's useful if you've run various tests or installed multiple updates.

You can navigate the recovery menu using the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons on your smartphone. To select an option, highlight it and press the Power button.

Using recovery mode for a factory reset

The Wipe data/factory reset option in Android recovery mode is commonly used when selling or transferring a smartphone. It resets your Android phone to factory settings and deletes all your personal data, including photos, apps, contacts, and messages.

Using the Wipe data/factory reset option will erase everything on an Android smartphone. Before choosing this option, take these steps:

  • Create a data backup: Save data you don't want to lose to cloud storage or a computer.
  • Sign out of Android: Open Settings > Accounts > your Google Account > Remove Account. This helps prevent Factory Reset Protection from locking you out after the reset.
  • Charge your phone: Make sure your battery has enough charge or keep your phone plugged in throughout the reset.

Exit recovery mode and restart your phone

When you're finished using recovery mode, use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to select Reboot system now. Press the Power button and wait for your device to restart.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
