HP laptop fan keeps running? What to check

⚡ Fast fix

  • A few minutes is normal—Fans may stay on after startup or a demanding task.
  • Check Task Manager—Background CPU use can keep the cooling system busy.
  • Try a lower power mode—Less power usually means less heat to remove.
  • Still running full speed while idle? That’s worth a closer look by an HP laptop pro.

You’ve closed the extra tabs, stepped away for a few minutes, and your HP® laptop fan is still going strong. A little fan noise is normal when the computer is working hard, but when it never seems to quiet down, it’s worth taking a closer look.

At Asurion, our experts know what can make a laptop work overtime even when you aren’t. Here’s what we’d check to calm down a fan that keeps running—and help the laptop stay cool.

Give it a few quiet minutes first

Restart the laptop, let Windows finish loading, then leave it alone for several minutes.

Right after startup, Windows, antivirus software, cloud syncing, HP utilities, and app updates may all run in the background. The fan can stay active until that work settles.

If it quiets down afterward, there probably isn’t anything wrong.

If it keeps running hard at an idle desktop, move on.

Find the background process keeping it busy

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and look at the CPU column.

You’re looking for a process that keeps using processor power even though you aren’t actively doing anything.

Common culprits include:

  • Windows or Microsoft Store updates.
  • Antivirus scans.
  • Cloud syncing.
  • Browser processes.
  • Game launchers.
  • A stuck or misbehaving program.

Close apps you recognize and don’t need. If CPU usage drops and the fan follows, you’ve found the reason it was running. That’s also the important difference between this problem and a physically noisy fan: a constant fan can be perfectly healthy—it may simply be responding to constant heat.

Don’t ditch it, fix it

Put the laptop on a hard surface

A cooling system can’t do much with blocked vents. Move the laptop off blankets, couches, pillows, and your lap, then inspect the vents underneath and along the sides.

If they’re dusty, shut the computer down, unplug it, and blow short bursts of canned air through the outside vents.

Change the Windows power mode

High-performance settings let the processor draw more power. More power creates more heat, and more heat keeps the fan running.

In Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Find Power mode.
  3. Choose Balanced or Best power efficiency.

Use the laptop normally for a while after changing the setting. If the fan now cycles on and off instead of running constantly, that’s a pretty strong clue that performance demand—not a bad fan—was driving the behavior.

Check HP thermal and performance controls

Depending on the laptop, you may see options in HP Command Center, HP Cool Control, or an OMEN utility. Those tools can change how aggressively the laptop balances performance, surface temperature, and fan activity.

For example, HP Cool Control on supported Spectre models can automatically adjust performance and fan settings to keep the laptop surface cooler. Don’t worry if your model doesn’t have it. These features are hardware-specific.

Install HP and Windows updates

Use HP Support Assistant to check for current drivers, firmware, and BIOS updates, then check Settings > Windows Update. A fan that began running constantly after a software change may settle once every related update and restart has completed.

If the issue began immediately after a driver or BIOS change and never existed before, note that timing. It can be useful if deeper troubleshooting becomes necessary.

Check whether the laptop is actually overheating

A constantly running fan makes more sense when the bottom of the laptop is very warm or performance drops as the machine heats up. Our guide to fixing an overheating laptop covers the signs that the cooling system is struggling rather than merely staying active.

If the laptop feels normal but the fan still runs at high speed continuously, use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to test the cooling hardware. HP provides fan-speed and thermal tests on supported systems.

And if you’re trying to decide whether the issue is “fan always on” versus “fan making a bad noise,” our article on why a laptop fan gets loud can help with that distinction.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Why does my HP laptop fan run all the time?

Background apps, updates, high CPU use, blocked airflow, performance settings, heat, or a cooling-system problem can keep the fan active.

Is it normal for an HP laptop fan to always run?

Some fan activity is normal. Constant high-speed fan activity while the laptop is cool and idle deserves troubleshooting.

How do I stop my HP laptop fan from running constantly?

Check CPU use, clear the vents, move the laptop to a hard surface, choose Balanced or Best power efficiency, and install HP and Windows updates.

Can Windows Update make my HP laptop fan run?

Yes. Updates and the background work that follows them can temporarily increase CPU activity and fan use.

How do I test the fan on an HP laptop?

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics offers fan-speed and thermal tests on supported models.
