Why your HP laptop is overheating—and how to cool it down

⚡ Fast fix

  • Hot enough to be uncomfortable? Shut it down and give it time to cool.
  • Get it off the blanket—Soft surfaces can block the vents underneath.
  • Listen to the fan—Constant roaring, grinding, or silence when the laptop is hot can point to a cooling problem.
  • Overheating keeps coming back? Continued heat can damage internal components. Stop a nearby

Your HP® laptop gets warm during a game or a big update—that part isn’t unusual. But when the fan is racing, the keyboard feels uncomfortably hot, and Windows starts slowing down or shutting off, the laptop is telling you it’s having trouble getting rid of heat.

That’s worth taking seriously. Asurion Experts see heat-related laptop problems regularly, and cooling the device down early can keep a temporary problem from becoming a damaged fan, battery, or internal component.

Shut it down and let it cool first

Save your work if you can, then shut down the laptop and unplug the charger and unnecessary accessories.

Put it on a hard, flat surface and let it cool for about 15–20 minutes before turning it back on.

If the computer is too hot to touch comfortably, keeps shutting itself off, or smells unusual, don’t keep forcing it through another restart. Those are signs to stop using it until the cause is clearer.

Give the vents room to breathe

A bed, couch, blanket, pillow, or lap can cover those openings and trap hot air inside. Move the computer to a desk or table and make sure nothing is pressed against the vents.

Look along the sides and bottom of the laptop for intake and exhaust vents. If you see dust buildup:

  1. Shut the laptop down.
  2. Unplug the power cable.
  3. Use canned air in short bursts to clear the outside vents.
  4. Wait a few minutes before turning the laptop back on.

For a broader maintenance walkthrough, our guide to cleaning your laptop inside and out explains how to safely clear vents and why deeper fan cleaning is better left to someone comfortable opening the device.

See whether an app is creating the heat

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and open Task Manager. Sort by CPU and GPU usage. A game, video editor, dozens of browser tabs, update process, or stuck background app can make the processor work harder—and every bit of that work produces heat.

If the laptop cools down after closing a heavy app, that tells you the cooling system may be keeping up normally but the workload was pushing it hard. If it overheats while sitting nearly idle, the problem deserves more attention.

Try Balanced or Best power efficiency

Performance modes let the processor work harder, which can also mean more heat.

In Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Find Power mode.
  3. Choose Balanced or Best power efficiency.

We recommend these settings when fan noise and heat are elevated because reducing power use lowers the amount of heat the cooling system has to remove.

Some HP Spectre models also include HP Cool Control, and certain HP systems offer thermal or performance options through HP Command Center. Those controls aren’t available on every model, so don’t worry if yours doesn’t show them.

Update Windows and HP drivers

Cooling behavior is partly controlled by firmware and drivers. Open HP Support Assistant and check the laptop for available updates. Then open Settings > Windows Update and install Windows updates as well.

Don’t interrupt an update once it starts. Keep the laptop connected to reliable power and have patience.

What the fan noise can tell you

A fan that gets louder while the processor is busy is doing its job. A fan that grinds, rattles, clicks, or struggles to spin is different.

Our article on why a laptop fan gets loud and how to fix it can help distinguish normal cooling noise from a fan that may be wearing out.

Run HP hardware diagnostics

When the heat returns during basic tasks after cleaning vents and reducing software load, test the hardware. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics includes fan tests on supported computers, including fan-speed and thermal checks.

A failed fan test, repeated thermal shutdowns, or overheating that happens while the laptop is mostly idle points beyond normal settings troubleshooting. At that point, a diagnostic at your nearest

can help determine whether the fan, thermal system, battery, or another component needs repair.

FAQ

Why does my HP laptop get so hot?

Blocked vents, dust, heavy CPU or GPU use, high-performance settings, outdated firmware, and cooling hardware problems can all raise temperatures.

Is it normal for an HP laptop to get hot while gaming?

Some extra heat and fan activity are normal during gaming. Repeated shutdowns, severe throttling, or a case that becomes painfully hot aren’t.

Can an HP laptop shut down because it’s overheating?

Yes. A laptop may slow down, restart, or shut itself off to protect hardware from excessive heat.

How can I cool down my HP laptop?

Move it to a hard surface, clear blocked vents, close heavy programs, use a less aggressive power mode, and let it cool before restarting.

When should I worry about HP laptop overheating?

Worry when it overheats during light use, shuts down repeatedly, makes abnormal fan noises, or continues getting hot after the vents and software load have been addressed.
