What to do when your Kindle gets stuck indexing books

Download a new book to your Kindle and there’s a little work happening behind the scenes before everything is ready. The Kindle indexes the book so you can search for characters, phrases, and other text later. Most of the time, you’ll never notice it happening.
But when the battery starts dropping faster than usual or search shows books still indexing hours later, that background job suddenly becomes a lot more noticeable. At Asurion, our experts know where to look when a routine Kindle process gets stuck. Here’s how we’d get indexing moving again.
First, make sure it’s actually stuck
Indexing takes time, especially after downloading several books at once. If you’ve just added a large batch to the Kindle, plug it in, keep it connected to Wi-Fi, and give it a chance to finish before troubleshooting.
What gets our attention is a book that’s still indexing many hours later without making any apparent progress—particularly if the Kindle has been sitting unused and plugged in during that time.
Find the book that’s holding things up
When indexing gets stuck, you don’t necessarily need to start removing your whole library. The goal is to figure out whether one particular book is causing the holdup.
Use Kindle search and look for the option showing text or items that haven’t finished indexing. Depending on your Kindle model and software version, the wording may vary, but you’re looking for titles that are still being processed.
If only one book keeps appearing there long after everything else has finished, you’ve got a much better place to focus.
Remove and download the problem book again
A download that didn’t complete cleanly can sometimes leave indexing spinning its wheels.
Press and hold the problem title or open its three-dot menu, then choose Remove Download. Restart the Kindle, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and download the book again from your library.

Restart if several books are stuck
If the problem isn’t isolated to one title, restart the Kindle before removing anything else.
Open Settings, choose the device options available on your model, and select Restart. You can also hold the power button until the restart controls appear.
Once it comes back on, leave the Kindle plugged in for a while and check the indexing status again rather than immediately downloading more books.
Check your available storage
Indexing needs working room, just like other background processes. A Kindle that’s nearly full is worth cleaning up before you keep troubleshooting.
Check the device storage in Settings and remove downloaded books you’ve already finished or other content you don’t need stored locally. You don’t have to permanently delete purchased books; removing their downloads is enough to reclaim space.
Make sure Kindle software is current
If indexing repeatedly gets stuck even with plenty of storage, check for a software update while the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi.
The exact menu path can vary by Kindle model and software version, but look under Settings or Device Options for the software-update controls. If the update option is unavailable, the Kindle may already be current or may need to finish other background activity first.
If the same book keeps causing trouble
A title that repeatedly gets stuck after you remove and redownload it makes us much less suspicious of the Kindle itself.
At that point, try leaving that book removed and see whether new downloads index normally. If they do, you’ve isolated the problem without resetting the device or rebuilding your library.
A factory reset would be a very big response to one stubborn book, so we wouldn’t go there unless the Kindle is having broader problems beyond indexing.
