Nintendo Switch not reading a game card? Try these fixes

⚡Fast fix

  • Try a different game. If a different game works, the first cartridge may be dirty or damaged.
  • Remove and clean the cartridge. Get rid of any debris that may be blocking the game connection.
  • Restart the console. Hold the power button for three seconds, then select Power Options > Restart.
  • Check the cartridge slot for debris. Gently remove any dust or dirt in the slot.

You pop in your favorite Nintendo Switch® game and settle in to play, only to realize that the Switch isn’t recognizing the cartridge—now what?

At Asurion, we’ve learned tech and repairs inside and out so we can help in situations exactly like these. Here’s how we’d fix a Nintendo Switch that’s not reading a game card.

Why your Nintendo Switch isn’t reading the game card

There are a couple of possibilities for why your Nintendo Switch game card could not be read, including:

  • Dirty or damaged card contacts: Check the cartridge for signs of damage and clean away any visible oil or dirt on the metal pins.
  • Wrong cartridge orientation: The game cartridge is backward, with the label facing away from the screen.
  • Debris lodged in the cartridge slot: Similarly, remove any debris in the cartridge slot that may be blocking the game connection.
  • A software glitch: Sometimes, temporary glitches lead to the Switch not reading game cards.
  • Outdated system software: Older system software may not be compatible with the game you’re trying to play.
  • A worn or faulty card reader: Internal damage may require Nintendo Switch game card reader repair to be able to recognize games again.

It’s not game over—yet

If your console stops working, we’ll handle the repairs. Make an appointment, or visit your nearest store today.

What to do when your Switch won’t recognize a game card

Start with the easiest solutions first to get your Nintendo Switch to recognize the game cartridge.

  1. Clean the game card: Take the card out and wipe off any dirt, paying special attention to the metal card contacts. Try tips for keeping your gaming gear free of dust and debris to prevent similar problems in the future.
  2. Test a different game card: If a different game loads right away, there’s probably something wrong with the original cartridge. You can discard fixes that focus on your Switch console.
  3. Restart the console: Hold the Power button for three seconds, then selectPower Options> Restart.
  4. Update the system software: Installing an update is one of the most commonly overlooked (yet effective) fixes. Go to System Settings > System > System Update. If there’s an update available, the system will download it.
  5. Check the game card and cartridge slot for physical damage: Look for any damage that could prevent a proper connection between the card and the console. A DIY fix may be possible, just like with another common Switch hardware issue, but not always.

As a last resort, you may want to consider a reset. Learn how to reset a Nintendo Switch through System Settings in the Home Menu.

When it might be more than the game card

If you try multiple game cards in your Nintendo Switch, and they all fail to read, the problem likely isn’t the game cards themselves. It may be that your Switch console is causing the issue.

Similarly, if the cartridge slot looks visibly damaged, you can assume the game card isn’t at fault. Keep an eye on other signs your Switch needs a closer look, such as your device not starting.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
