Cleaning up your Kindle library? Here’s how to remove books
💡 Need to know
- Remove Download keeps the book. It frees up space on your Kindle™ but leaves the title in your library.
- Permanently Delete is different. Use it only when you actually want the book removed from your account.
- Finished reading? Removing the download is usually all you need.
- Kindle cleanup getting complicated? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
A Kindle library can get crowded surprisingly fast. A few vacation reads, a long-forgotten series, and that book you absolutely planned to finish someday can leave you scrolling past a lot of titles you don’t need on the device anymore.
At Asurion, we know managing your tech should be just as easy as using it. Whether you’re trying to free up Kindle storage or simply clean up your library, the important part is choosing the right kind of “remove.”
First, decide whether you want to remove or delete the book
This distinction matters.
- If you choose Remove Download, the copy stored on your Kindle is removed, but the book stays in your Amazon library. You can download it again later without buying it again.
- Permanently Delete goes further. It removes the title from your library and Amazon account, so don't choose it just because you're finished reading for now.
For most Kindle cleanup, Remove Download is the option we'd recommend.
How to remove a downloaded book from Kindle
Find the book in your Kindle library, then:
- Press and hold the book cover or tap the three-dot menu.
- Select Remove Download.
That's it. The downloaded copy leaves the Kindle, freeing up storage, while the book remains available in your library. If you change your mind later, tap the title while you're connected to Wi-Fi to download it again.
Removing several books at once
If you're freeing up more than a little space, deleting downloads one by one gets old quickly.
Depending on your Kindle model and software version, look in Settings for storage or device-management options that let you review downloaded content. This can make it easier to spot books you haven't opened in a while and remove several downloads during the same cleanup.
Before clearing a bunch of titles, make sure the Kindle has synced. That way your reading progress and other synced information are current before the local copies disappear.
How to permanently delete a Kindle book
This is the option to use when you genuinely don't want the title in your Amazon library anymore—not when you simply need a little more room.
If Permanently Delete appears in the book's menu, select it and follow the confirmation prompts. You can also manage Kindle content through your Amazon account.
Read that confirmation screen before tapping through it. Permanently deleting a purchased title can mean you'll need to buy it again if you decide you want it back later.
What if a removed book still appears?
Don't be surprised if a book remains visible in your library after you choose Remove Download. That's intentional.
Kindle can show books stored in your Amazon library even when they aren't downloaded to the device. If you only want to see what's physically stored on the Kindle, use the library filters to show Downloaded titles.
That gives you a much cleaner view without permanently deleting anything.
Freeing up Kindle storage without losing your books
If storage is the reason you're cleaning house, start with finished books, large downloads, and content you can easily download again later.
There's usually no benefit to permanently deleting purchased books just to create space. Removing the downloaded copies gives you the storage back while keeping your library intact.
