Rename eero devices so your network list makes sense

💡 Need to know

  • Name the mystery devices first—Manufacturer and MAC information can help identify them.
  • Keep names specific—“Jules’s iPhone” beats “Phone 4.”
  • Seeing doubles? One device can appear more than once because of different network interfaces.
  • Need help organizing the network?
Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.

A network list full of “Unknown,” “iPhone,” and “Device” entries isn’t much of an inventory. When something starts using bandwidth—or the family wants to pause one kid’s tablet—it helps to know which device is actually which.

Asurion Experts help customers make home tech easier to live with, and a little naming cleanup can make the eero® app much more useful.

Identify a device before renaming it

Open Devices and tap the mystery device. eero can show details including its manufacturer, IP address, MAC address, connection type, and which eero it’s using.

The manufacturer is a good first clue, but don’t treat it as absolute proof. Sometimes eero shows the company that made the Wi-Fi chipset rather than the familiar brand on the outside of the device.

When the name is still a mystery, compare the MAC or IP address shown in eero with the network information on the phone, computer, TV, or smart-home device you’re trying to identify.

Rename the device in eero

Once you know what it is:

  1. Find the device on Home > Devices or search for it in the Devices tab.
  2. Tap its current nickname.
  3. On the device page, tap the nickname again.
  4. Enter the new nickname and, if useful, change its device symbol.
  5. Tap Save.

That changes how the device is labeled inside eero, making it easier to find later.

Use names you’ll understand six months from now

The most useful names answer “whose?” or “where?” without needing a second investigation.

“Kitchen TV,” “Maya school Chromebook,” “Office printer,” and “Front door camera” tell you something. “New device,” “Tablet,” and “TV 2” have a way of becoming mysteries again, surprisingly fast.

If several people own the same model of phone or laptop, include a person or location in the nickname. That makes profiles, pauses, and bandwidth checks much easier later.

One device can show up more than once

A duplicate isn’t automatically an intruder. Some devices have separate Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces, multiple wireless radios, or privacy features that use randomized MAC addresses. Those connections can appear as separate entries even though there’s only one physical device sitting on the desk.

Check the manufacturer, MAC address, connection type, and recent activity before blocking anything. If two entries belong to the same device, give each a clear nickname so you know what you’re looking at next time.

The connection details can tell you more than the name

Once devices are labeled, the eero app becomes much easier to troubleshoot with. Tap a device and you can see which eero it’s connected to, which Wi-Fi band it’s using, its connection strength, and live activity.

That comes in handy when one laptop is slow but everything else is fine. Instead of blaming the whole network, you can see whether that specific device is hanging onto a distant eero or weak connection.

FAQ

How do I rename a device in the eero app?

Open Devices, select the device, tap its current nickname, edit the name on the Appearance screen, then tap Save.

Can I identify unknown devices on eero?

Absolutely. Check the manufacturer, IP address, MAC address, connection type, and recent activity to narrow down what the device is.

Why does the same device appear twice in eero?

It may use separate Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces, multiple wireless cards, or different MAC addresses.

Does renaming a device in eero change its actual device name?

Nope. The nickname is there to help identify that connection inside the eero app.

What are good names for eero devices?

Use clear labels based on the owner, room, or job—something like “Office MacBook” or “Living room TV” rather than “Device 3.”
