How to repair broken HDMI port pins on Xbox One

Product image of a white Xbox One on a red background

⚡ Fast fix

  • Try another TV and HDMI cable first. If there’s still no picture, the port is likely the issue.
  • Pay attention to how the cable fits. If it feels loose or the signal cuts out when it moves, that’s a red flag.
  • Look inside the port with a flashlight. Bent or missing pins usually mean physical damage.
  • If any of this sounds familiar, stop here. A tech at your nearest
    uBreakiFix® by Asurion store
can confirm the damage and keep it from getting worse.

You finally sit down to play, power up your Xbox One®, and get hit with a “No Signal” screen. You swap HDMI cables, try another TV, even restart the console—still nothing. At that point, it’s fair to wonder whether the HDMI port itself is damaged, especially if the cable doesn’t feel as snug as it used to.

Asurion Experts see this exact situation all the time. Broken HDMI pins are one of the most common console hardware issues—and they’re also one of the easiest to make worse if you try to fix them the wrong way.

How to tell if your Xbox One HDMI port pins are broken

Before assuming the worst, it helps to check a few specific things. These signs can help you confirm whether the HDMI port itself is the problem—or if something else is causing the issue.

1. You get no picture on any TV

If your Xbox One powers on but shows no image:

  • Try a different HDMI cable you know works.
  • Plug into a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • Test on a second TV or monitor.

If there’s still no signal—especially if the console worked recently—the HDMI port becomes the most likely cause.

2. The HDMI cable won’t stay connected

A healthy HDMI port should hold the cable firmly in place. If the cable:

  • Slips out easily.
  • Loses signal when lightly touched.
  • Needs to be held “just right” to work.

That usually means the internal pins have bent or broken free from the port housing.

3. You can see bent or missing pins

Shine a light into the HDMI port and look closely. Warning signs include:

  • Pins that aren’t straight.
  • Pins pushed flat against the side of the port.
  • An obvious gap where a pin should be.

If you see this, the port needs repair—not adjustment.

What’s safe to DIY—and what you shouldn’t try

At this point, it’s important to know where DIY troubleshooting ends.

What’s generally safe to do

  • Swap HDMI cables and test different TVs or monitors.
  • Gently remove visible dust using compressed air (without inserting anything into the port).
  • Power-cycle the console to rule out a temporary handshake issue.

What you should not try

  • Bending pins back with tweezers, needles, or paper clips.
  • Jamming the cable in tighter to “make it work.”
  • Opening the console without proper tools or experience.

HDMI pins are soldered directly to the motherboard. Even slight pressure can tear solder pads or traces, turning a fixable port into a much more expensive repair.

Restarting or resetting the console won’t fix physical damage, but if you want to rule out software before stopping, you can try a reset using this guide on how to factory reset an Xbox One.

When it’s time to bring it in

Broken HDMI pins require precision tools and microsoldering, which makes this repair firmly outside safe DIY territory. If the port feels loose, pins are visibly damaged, or you’re getting no signal at all, continuing to troubleshoot at home can make things worse.

FAQ

Can broken HDMI pins be fixed?

Yes, but only with professional tools. In most cases, the HDMI port needs to be replaced or re-soldered.

Is it safe to keep using an Xbox with a damaged HDMI port?

No. Continued use can worsen the damage and affect nearby components on the board.

How long does HDMI port repair take?

It depends on the extent of the damage, but many Xbox One HDMI port repairs can be completed the same day once diagnosed.
