Samsung Galaxy moisture warning won't go away? Try these fixes

⚡ Fast fix

  • Don't plug in your phone. Avoid using a charging cable while moisture may still be present.
  • Air dry. Let the USB-C port dry completely before troubleshooting further.
  • Check for other issues. Debris, software issues, or a faulty cable can sometimes trigger a persistent warning.
  • Try wireless charging. Compatible Galaxy phones may support wireless charging while the USB-C port dries.

A moisture warning on a Samsung Galaxy® is one alert worth taking seriously—at least at first. But when the charging port has had plenty of time to dry and your phone is still refusing to charge, it’s fair to wonder what’s going on.

At Asurion, our experts know when a warning is doing its job and when something else may be keeping it around. Here’s how to safely clear a stubborn moisture detected warning and know when the charging port itself needs a closer look.

Why does my Samsung Galaxy say moisture detected?

If you get a Samsung Galaxy moisture detected warning, some liquid or debris has probably gotten into your USB-C charging port.

The warning doesn’t just let you know about the moisture. It can also temporarily disable wired charging, since plugging a cable into a wet USB-C port can cause more permanent damage. Your phone is trying to prevent short circuits and corrosion in the charging port.

Some reasons why the warning may appear include:

  • Water or liquid in the port.
  • Dirt or debris in the port.
  • Corroded pins or damaged charging cables.
  • Temporary software glitches.

Software glitches or corroded pins in your charging port can cause a false positive, leading you to see the moisture detected warning when there isn’t actually any liquid present.

How to fix the moisture detected warning on Samsung Galaxy

If you see the moisture detected warning, it’s best to assume there is liquid in the port. Take these actions as soon as possible to prevent damage.

Let the charging port dry

Shake your device gently with the charging port facing down to try to clear any trapped liquid. Then, leave your phone standing up with room underneath to air dry for at least a few hours. While there may still be moisture in the USB-C port, make sure you don’t plug your phone in to charge. Also avoid using a hair dryer or other external heat to dry the port, since this could overheat the device and force water farther in.

Check the charging port for debris

Look in your charging port to see if you can see any lint, dirt, or other debris that could interfere with charging or moisture detection. Gently use a wooden toothpick or other non-metal device to scrape out the debris if present.

Restart your Samsung Galaxy

If a temporary software glitch is causing the warning, simply restarting your device may be enough to get rid of it. After you make sure the charging port is dry, restart your device.

Clear the USB settings cache

If you still can’t get the alert to go away, try clearing the USB settings cache with these steps.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Filter and sort.
  2. Toggle on Show system apps and tap OK.
  3. Choose Storage under USB Settings and select Clear cache.

Update your phone and test another charger

Update your phone if there’s an update available to help clear any glitches. Also, try testing another compatible cable and charger to rule out software or accessory problems.

What if the moisture detected warning won't go away?

If you try these troubleshooting steps and the warning still won’t go away, there may be charging port damage rather than moisture or a software issue. Try charging your device with wireless charging if your device is compatible.

When does your Samsung charging port need repair?

Look for these other signs of a damaged charging port:

  • Your charging cable feels loose when you plug it in.
  • The base of the cable feels hot when plugged in.
  • You can see rust or debris that can’t be removed in the port.
  • There are bent internal pins in the USB-C port.

If you notice these signs of possible hardware damage, you may need to have the charging port professionally inspected and repaired.

FAQ

How long does the moisture detected warning last on a Samsung Galaxy?

The warning should disappear after the USB-C port is completely dry. Depending on how much moisture entered the port, that may take several hours.

Why does my Samsung say moisture detected when the port is dry?

Debris, corrosion, a damaged charging cable, or a temporary software issue can sometimes trigger the warning even when there isn't liquid in the port.

Can I charge my Samsung while the moisture detected warning is showing?

Avoid wired charging until the port is completely dry. If your Galaxy supports wireless charging, you may be able to use a compatible wireless charger in the meantime.

How do I get rid of a moisture detected warning that won't go away?

After confirming the port is completely dry, restart the phone, check the port for debris, clear the USB settings cache, update the phone, and test another compatible charger.
