Steam Deck stuck on the boot logo? Try these fixes

⚡Fast fix

  • Force a restart. Hold the Power button until the screen goes dark, then turn it back on.
  • Give updates extra time. If your Steam Deck™ won’t boot after an update, wait a few extra minutes for SteamOS to finish installing the update.
  • Check the battery level. A drained battery may not have enough power to complete the boot process.
  • Still stuck? Use the SteamOS recovery tool to reinstall SteamOS and reset system settings without erasing your saved games.

It’s the weekend, and all you can think about is playing endless rounds of Elden Ring® or Hades®. You press the power button, but your Steam Deck won’t boot past the logo. It’s frustrating. But a Steam Deck stuck on the boot logo is usually a fixable issue you can handle yourself with a few simple steps.

At Asurion, we help millions of people fix everyday device problems. Whether your Steam Deck is stuck in an installation loop or its buttons aren’t working, we’ve got the know-how to get you out of any tech jam. Here’s how to fix a Steam Deck that won’t get past the boot logo.

What causes a Steam Deck to freeze on the boot logo?

Your Steam Deck can be stuck on the boot logo for several reasons:

  • Low storage or memory can prevent SteamOS from loading properly.
  • A buggy or interrupted update may leave your device unable to complete the boot process.
  • A low battery may not provide enough power for a full boot. See why your Steam Deck might not be charging for related troubleshooting.
  • Problems after upgrading your Steam Deck’s storage can prevent your device from booting normally.

It’s not game over—yet

If your console stops working, we’ll handle the repairs. Make an appointment, or visit your nearest store today.

What to do when your Steam Deck is stuck on the logo

Try these fixes in order, since most system freezes clear up before you reach the last step.

1. Force restart your Steam Deck

Press and hold the Power button for about 4–16 seconds until the screen goes dark. Wait a few seconds, then press the Power button again to turn on your Steam Deck.

2. Charge your Steam Deck

If your battery is too low, it may not have enough power to fully boot. Plug in your Steam Deck and let it charge for 15–30 minutes before trying to start it again.

3. Enable Steam Deck Battery Storage Mode

Enter Battery Storage Mode to completely power down your deck and clear a stuck boot cycle that a normal restart won’t fix.

  1. Press Power + Volume Up to open the BIOS menu.
  2. Use the D-pad to find Setup Utility and press A to select it.
  3. Find the Power menu and select Battery Storage Mode.
  4. Confirm the prompt to fully power down the Deck.
  5. Restart your device.

4. Roll back a recent update

If your Steam Deck started getting stuck on the boot logo right after a SteamOS update, consider switching back to the previous stable version.

  1. Hold the Power button for 10 seconds to shut down your Deck.
  2. Hold the three-dot button (…) and press Power to turn the device on.
  3. Keep holding … until the SteamOS menu appears.
  4. Select a previous operating system version you want to boot.

5. Reinstall SteamOS

Still stuck on the boot logo even after trying all the above steps? Repairing SteamOS can resolve persistent software issues that prevent your Steam Deck from booting normally.

Unlike a Steam Deck factory reset, repairing SteamOS reinstalls your operating system while trying to preserve your games and personal content.

When a Steam Deck boot issue needs professional repair

A Steam Deck stuck on the boot logo is rarely a hardware problem, so most people resolve it at home. But it’s worth knowing when to DIY a Steam Deck repair versus calling in a pro. Here’s when to step back from DIY fixes:

  • Your device’s screen stays black instead of showing the logo
  • Your device won’t charge at all
  • Your Steam Deck won’t turn on at all

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

How do I fix a Steam Deck stuck on the boot screen?

To fix a Steam Deck stuck on the boot logo, start with a force restart. If a hard reset doesn’t work, charge your device for 15 minutes, then boot into BIOS mode to try Battery Storage Mode or roll back a recent update. If all else fails, try reinstalling SteamOS.

How do I get my Steam Deck out of a boot loop?
