Whether you’re running out of space on your Android™ phone or want a backup of your photo library, transferring photos to your computer is an ideal solution. You may be asking yourself, “How do I transfer photos from my Android phone to a computer?” What’s the best method?

Asurion Experts have tried them all, so we can walk you through how to transfer photos from an Android to a computer in several ways. Follow the steps for different Android photo transfer methods.

Choose the right transfer method for your setup

After you turn your smartphone into a DSLR and apply some great phone photography tips, you may want to get those stunning photos onto your computer. But, how do you transfer photos from an Android phone to a computer?

There are several different ways—it’s just a matter of picking the right transfer method for your needs. Consider these options:

  • USB connection: For direct reliability and built-in file access on Windows/Mac
  • Google Photos: For wireless backups
  • Cloud services: For cloud storage and access from any device, including your computer

These days, many people already use cloud services like Google Drive or Dropbox to store their files in the cloud. That way, you can access them on any internet-connected device, no matter where you are. You can also use these services to transfer files, such as photos, from one device to another without a direct connection.

Similarly, Google Photos is a wireless option for getting your photos from your Android phone to your computer. All you need is an internet connection on both devices.

However, if your internet connection isn’t strong and reliable, it may be best to use a USB cable to transfer your photos. Interruptions in your connection could disrupt your wireless file transfer. It’s also a good idea to organize photos on your phone before uploading, so they’re easier to sort through.

Transfer photos using a USB cable

When you have a large photo library to transfer to your computer or just want to complete a quick backup, the faster method is probably to connect your phone directly to the computer with a USB cable. USB cables create a direct connection that’s quick and reliable. Follow these steps:

  1. Plug your data-capable cable into your Android phone and a compatible port on your computer. Ideally, you won’t use an adapter to plug in the cable, since this can slow down data uploads.
  2. Unlock your phone.
  3. Swipe down from the top of your phone screen to view your notifications and select Charging this device via USB
  4. Choose File Transfer or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) under USB preferences. If your USB preferences are on No data transfer, you won’t be able to transfer your pictures to the computer.
  5. Open File Explorer on your PC.
  6. Find your device and double-click on it.
  7. Go to Internal Storage > DCIM > Camera to find the photos on your connected phone.
  8. Drag and drop the photos you want to upload into a file on your computer.

It may take a moment for all the photos to transfer, especially if you’re uploading a large photo library all at once. Once all the files have finished uploading, right-click your phone in File Explorer and select Eject to safely disconnect it.

On a Mac®, the process is very similar. Follow steps 1 through 4, then:

  1. Open Image Capture on your Mac.
  2. Select your Android phone from the sidebar and choose Import All or pick specific photos to upload.
  3. Click on the Import To menu in the window and select Save items to your computer. Alternatively, you can create a PDF or webpage with the photos.
  4. Choose Download or Download All

Locate your phone in Finder® and select the Eject button to safely disconnect it once all your photos have finished downloading. The photo transfer process for Android is different from transferring iPhone photos to a computer, so make sure you follow the right steps for your device.

Access photos on your computer (Windows® or Mac)

Once you copy over the photos to your computer, you can browse, edit, and share them.

On Windows, use File Explorer to see all your uploaded photos. On Mac, use Finder to locate the right folder. Approve any necessary permissions and reconnect your phone with a USB cable if the folders don’t load properly.
