Windows 11 taskbar not working? Try these fixes

⚡ Fast fix

  • Restart Windows™ Explorer first. Open Task Manager, right-click Windows Explorer under Processes, and select Restart to clear most taskbar glitches.
  • Restart your PC. A full restart can resolve taskbar issues that a Windows Explorer restart can’t.
  • Look for updates. Microsoft™ patches bugs, and a pending update might already have your fix.
  • Fix corrupted system files. Run a quick system scan to detect and repair corrupted Windows™ system files that can make your taskbar unresponsive.

Your Windows 11 home screen looks perfect. Everything works as it should, but when you hover over the taskbar or click it to open an app, check your notifications, or search for a file, nothing happens. It’s like clicking on a dead button.

Don’t worry. While a taskbar not working in Windows 11 might sound scary, it's a common, quick-fix issue rather than a sign that something’s seriously wrong.

At Asurion, we help millions of people work through everyday Windows glitches that seem complicated but turn out to have simple causes. Whether you’re unable to click the taskbar in Windows 11 or you’re trying to reset a Windows PC from scratch, we’ve got tips to get your system back on track. Here’s how we'd troubleshoot a Windows 11 taskbar that’s not working.

Why is my taskbar acting up?

Windows 11 taskbar freezing often traces back to Windows Explorer, the background process that runs your desktop, Start menu, and taskbar. It can happen due to:

  • A crashed Windows Explorer process.
  • Corrupted system files.
  • A problematic recent update.
  • Display configuration issues.
  • A software conflict.

These issues can feel overwhelming, but most of them have straightforward solutions.

Restart Windows Explorer

Because most Windows taskbar not responsive issues stem from Windows Explorer, restarting it can fix many glitches. Follow these steps to restart Windows Explorer.

  1. On your keyboard, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. If you see a simplified window, click More details to expand it.
  3. Click Processes, then find and right-click Windows Explorer.
  4. Select Restart.

Don’t ditch it, fix it

No matter the issue, our experts can repair your devices fast. Make an appointment or visit your local uBreakiFix by Asurion today.

Schedule a repair

Restart your PC and check for updates

If restarting Explorer didn’t solve your Windows 11 taskbar-frozen problem, restart your PC. A full PC reboot clears out lingering background processes that a Windows Explorer restart alone can’t touch.

Still unable to click the taskbar in Windows 11 even after restarting your device? The issue could be a bug. Check if you have a pending update that could fix the glitch, as Microsoft has patched taskbar bugs before. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Repair system files if it's still stuck

If your taskbar is still not working, system errors caused by corrupted files could be the culprit. However, repairing system files might require more digging, and it’s a bit technical. If you’re comfortable with Windows’ Command Prompt, follow these steps to scan for and repair corrupted system files.

  1. Type cmd into your search bar.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Let the scan finish and then restart your PC.

If the scan finds an error it can’t fix, you need a deep repair tool called DISM. Follow these instructions to repair your Windows system image with DISM.

  1. Type cmd into your search bar.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  4. Press Enter.

It can take several minutes to run the command, so let it finish before you close the Command Prompt window.

Create a new user profile as a last resort

If you’ve tried everything above and your taskbar is still not working, the issue could stem from other common Windows 11 problems, such as a corrupted profile rather than a system-wide problem. As a last resort, create a new user profile.

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Other users.
  2. Select Add account and follow the prompts to create a new profile.
  3. Sign in to the new profile and check if the taskbar works normally.

If the taskbar works in the new profile, you can transfer files and settings to it.
