The Amazon Alexa app is looking for an Echo® that’s sitting right beside the phone, yet somehow the two are acting like strangers.
Asurion Experts help people get smart speakers connected every day. Before resetting Bluetooth settings or wiping the Echo, make sure the speaker is actually ready to be discovered and that the phone has what it needs to see it.
Put the Echo in setup mode
For a new Echo, plug it in and give it time to start. Many Echo speakers show an orange light when they’re ready for setup.
Then open the Amazon Alexa app and go to Devices > + > Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more. Follow the prompts for the model.
If the Echo is already set up and answering voice requests normally, it may not need setup mode at all. In that case, check the Amazon account in the app before restarting the speaker.
Bluetooth matters during setup
Make sure Bluetooth is turned on for the phone and that the Alexa app has the permissions it needs. Keep the phone close to the Echo while the app searches.
There’s usually no need to erase every saved Bluetooth device from the phone. The goal is simply to make Bluetooth available for Alexa setup, not turn the phone’s wireless settings into a blank slate.
Restart the Echo and phone
If setup mode looks right but the Echo still doesn’t appear, unplug the Echo for about 30 seconds, restart the phone, then try the device search again.
Keep the Echo near the router while setting it up. Once the app finds the speaker, it still has to connect that Echo to Wi-Fi, so a weak network can make discovery look like it failed when the process actually stalled one step later.
If the Echo appears but can’t finish joining Wi-Fi, our article on fixing Alexa when it won’t connect to the internet is the better next step.
Check which Amazon account is signed in
If the Echo was already registered and working before it disappeared from the app, make sure the Alexa app is using the same Amazon account that owns the Echo.
A different Amazon login can make an existing device list look empty even though the speaker is online and working perfectly. This is especially worth checking after changing phones, reinstalling Alexa, or switching between household Amazon accounts.
Add the Echo manually
Don’t wait forever for an automatic discovery screen. Open Devices, tap the +, choose Add Device, select Amazon Echo, then pick the correct Echo family and follow the prompts. Amazon’s current setup flow still uses this manual route for Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop, and related speakers.
If the app finds the Echo this way, there’s nothing else to reset.
Save a factory reset for a genuinely stuck Echo
If the speaker won’t enter setup, won’t respond, and can’t be added after the phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Amazon account all check out, a reset may eventually make sense. Because reset steps vary by Echo model, use the model-specific directions in our guide to resetting Alexa on an Amazon Echo.
A factory reset erases that Echo’s Wi-Fi and device setup, so it should be the late move—not the opening act.

FAQ
Why can’t the Alexa app find my Echo?
The Echo may not be in setup mode, Bluetooth may be off, the phone may be too far away, or the Alexa app may be signed into a different Amazon account.
Does Bluetooth need to be on to set up an Echo?
Yes. The Alexa app can use Bluetooth to find a nearby Echo during setup.
What color should an Echo be during setup?
Many Echo speakers use an orange light to show they’re ready for setup.
Should I reset Bluetooth on my phone if Alexa can’t find Echo?
Usually not. Turn Bluetooth on, restart the phone if needed, and retry setup before clearing all saved Bluetooth connections.
Should I factory reset the Echo if the app can’t find it?
Not right away. Try setup mode, Bluetooth, a phone restart, the correct Amazon account, and manual Add Device first.
