Alexa app won’t let you sign in? Here’s what to do
⚡ Fast fix
- Try Amazon in a browser—If that login fails too, the problem isn’t just the Alexa app.
- Check the account details—Passwords are case-sensitive, and phone-number accounts need the correct country code.
- Waiting on a code? Resend the verification code before changing the password again.
- Still locked out of Alexa? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
The Amazon® Alexa app opens, asks for a sign-in, and then refuses the same account information that seemed perfectly fine yesterday. Before reinstalling the app or touching an Echo, find out whether the Amazon account itself can still sign in normally.
Asurion Experts help people get smart home accounts and devices working together every day. That one comparison can save a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.
Try signing in to Amazon first
Open Amazon in a browser and sign in using the same email address, phone number, password, passkey, or verification method used for Alexa.
If that fails too, stay with the Amazon account. Amazon’s current account guidance recommends checking the exact email or mobile number, including the country code for phone-number accounts, and remembering that passwords are case-sensitive.
If Amazon signs in normally in the browser but the Alexa app rejects the same account, move on—the account itself is probably fine.
If a verification code never arrives
Some Amazon accounts use a one-time security code instead of, or in addition to, a password.
Check that the code is going to the expected email address or mobile number, then use Resend OTP or Resend Code on the verification screen. Also check spam or junk folders if the code is being sent by email.
Repeatedly changing the password while the real problem is a delayed verification code usually just adds another variable.
Refresh the Alexa app
Force close the Alexa app and reopen it. If the sign-in screen still loops or throws an error, update the app from the phone’s app store and restart the phone.
Android users can also clear the Alexa app cache under Settings > Apps > Amazon Alexa > Storage & cache > Clear cache. That removes temporary app files without deleting the Amazon account itself.
If the app is already current and still won’t accept a browser-tested login, uninstall and reinstall it. Sign back in with the same Amazon account afterward.
Try another connection
Turn Wi-Fi off on the phone and try the Alexa sign-in over cellular data, or connect to a different trusted Wi-Fi network.
- If the login suddenly works, the original network, VPN, DNS filtering, or another network-level setting may be interfering with the sign-in session. Turn off a VPN temporarily while testing.
- If both Wi-Fi and cellular fail while Amazon still signs in correctly in a browser, the phone or app remains the stronger suspect.
Make sure it’s the account you actually use for Alexa
This becomes especially important after changing phones, creating another Amazon account, or sharing Echo devices with another household member.
Signing into Alexa successfully with the wrong Amazon account can look like a different problem: Echo devices, routines, and smart-home gear appear to be missing even though the login itself worked.
Don’t reset the Echo for an app sign-in problem
If the Echo still responds normally and the Alexa app is the only thing refusing the account, leave the Echo alone. Factory resetting a working speaker won’t fix an incorrect password, missing verification code, or broken phone-app session.
Fix the account or app first; reconnect hardware only if the hardware itself develops a separate problem.

FAQ
Why won’t the Alexa app let me sign in?
The account details may be wrong, a verification code may be delayed, or the Alexa app or phone may have a stuck session.
How do I know whether my Amazon password is the problem?
Try signing into Amazon in a browser with the same credentials. If that fails too, reset or recover the Amazon account before troubleshooting Alexa.
Why am I not getting an Alexa verification code?
Check the email address or phone number tied to the Amazon account, then use the resend option and check spam or junk folders.
Will reinstalling the Alexa app delete my Echo setup?
Nope. Reinstalling the phone app doesn’t factory reset the Echo. Sign back into the same Amazon account afterward.
Should I reset Alexa if the app won’t sign in?
No. An Echo reset doesn’t solve an Amazon account or phone-app login problem.
