Amazon Smart Thermostat temperature wrong? Here’s what to check
⚡ Fast fix
- Compare the readings—Leave a separate thermometer beside the thermostat for at least 15 minutes.
- Check the surroundings—Sunlight, vents, open windows, and cooking heat can throw off the sensor.
- Looking for calibration? Amazon Smart Thermostat doesn’t currently offer a manual temperature offset.
- Still several degrees off? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
The Amazon® Smart Thermostat says 76°, but the room feels nowhere close. Before assuming the sensor is bad, it’s worth checking whether the thermostat is actually reading the wrong temperature—or whether the air around that particular wall is different from the rest of the room.
Asurion Experts help people make sense of smart home tech every day. A controlled comparison and a quick look at the thermostat’s surroundings can tell you a lot before anyone starts changing HVAC settings.
Compare it with another thermometer
Put a reliable room thermometer right next to the thermostat and leave both alone for at least 15 minutes. Don’t hold the thermometer in your hand or move it around the room while comparing—the goal is to measure the same pocket of air.
A degree or so of difference isn’t especially useful on its own. A consistent gap of several degrees is the clue worth paying attention to.
Look at what’s happening around the thermostat
Amazon recommends installing its Smart Thermostat on an interior wall away from conditions that can make the sensor read hotter or colder than the room really is.
Take a look for:
- Direct sunlight hitting the thermostat.
- A supply vent blowing toward it.
- An open window or exterior-door draft nearby.
- Heat from a kitchen, appliance, lamp, or other source.
- Cool air from an air conditioner or fan aimed in its direction.
If the reading becomes more accurate when one of those conditions changes, the thermostat may be measuring its immediate surroundings correctly—the location is what’s making that reading unhelpful.
Restart the thermostat
If the placement looks fine and the comparison still seems wrong, restart the thermostat without erasing its setup. Gently pull the thermostat faceplate away from the wall plate, wait a few seconds, then reattach it. Give the sensor time to settle again before comparing the temperature.
That’s very different from a factory reset. There’s no reason to wipe the thermostat’s Wi-Fi and setup just to refresh a temperature reading.
Can you recalibrate an Amazon Smart Thermostat?
Not manually. Amazon currently does not provide a user-facing temperature calibration or offset setting for the Amazon Smart Thermostat.
That matters because plenty of thermostat advice online says to “adjust the calibration” by a degree or two. On this model, there isn’t a hidden menu that makes that possible. If the thermostat stays several degrees away from a nearby thermometer after a restart and after ruling out sunlight, drafts, and nearby heat or cold sources, Amazon support is the better next step.
If the reading matches but the room still feels wrong
Say the thermostat and the thermometer beside it both read about 72°, but the bedroom across the house feels more like 78°. That points away from a bad thermostat reading.
Airflow, HVAC balance, closed vents, duct problems, insulation, and the thermostat’s location can all make one part of the house feel different from the spot where the thermostat is measuring. If heating or cooling itself isn’t behaving normally, our article on Amazon Smart Thermostat connection and troubleshooting checks can help separate a thermostat issue from a broader system problem.

FAQ
Can you recalibrate an Amazon Smart Thermostat?
Nope. Amazon currently does not offer a manual temperature calibration or offset feature for this thermostat.
Why is my Amazon Smart Thermostat reading too high?
Direct sunlight, nearby heat, cooking, warm airflow, or the thermostat’s location can make the sensor read warmer than the rest of the room.
How do I test whether my thermostat temperature is accurate?
Place a separate thermometer next to it for at least 15 minutes, then compare the two readings without moving either one.
How do I restart an Amazon Smart Thermostat?
Gently detach the thermostat faceplate from the wall plate, wait a few seconds, then reattach it.
Should I factory reset my thermostat because the temperature is wrong?
Not first. A restart and controlled temperature comparison are much less disruptive, and a factory reset won’t add a manual calibration feature.
