Why your Blink camera misses motion at night

Your Blink® camera catches the delivery driver all afternoon, then somehow misses someone walking past the porch after dark. It’s tempting to blame night vision, but the camera’s motion sensor and the infrared light used to see at night aren’t doing the same job.

See what happens during the day

Arm the Blink system, make sure Motion Detection is enabled for that camera, and walk through the same area during daylight.

  • If daylight detection is reliable but nighttime detection isn’t, keep the camera armed and leave those basic settings alone for the moment.

Infrared night vision isn’t the motion sensor

Many Blink cameras use a passive infrared, or PIR, sensor to detect changes in heat moving through the scene. The infrared LEDs used for night vision help the camera produce an image in darkness; they don’t replace the motion sensor.

That distinction matters because changing night-vision brightness won’t necessarily make PIR motion detection more sensitive. Temperature, distance, camera position, and the direction someone moves through the sensor’s view all affect what it notices.

Change the way you test it

Instead of walking straight toward the camera, try crossing from one side of its view to the other. With PIR-equipped Blink cameras, movement across the sensor generally creates a stronger change than someone approaching it head-on.

For a useful nighttime test:

  • Start roughly 7 to 19 feet from the camera.
  • Walk sideways through the main coverage area.
  • Keep large objects, glass, and branches out of the path.
  • Test the same route a few times before changing another setting.

If that works but the normal path to the door doesn’t, a small angle change may help more than another trip through the settings menu.

Adjust sensitivity and zones together

Open the Blink app and go to Device Settings > Motion Settings. Increase Motion Sensitivity a little—not straight to maximum—and make sure the area you’re testing hasn’t been blocked out in Motion Zones. Save the change, walk out of frame, then test the same route again.

The useful part here is changing one thing at a time. Otherwise, when motion suddenly starts working, there’s no way to know whether sensitivity, the zone, or simply standing closer fixed it.

Temperature can change what PIR sees

PIR motion detection relies on heat differences, so outdoor conditions can affect how distinct a person appears to the sensor. Blink also notes that camera placement, object size, distance, and temperature influence motion detection.

That doesn’t mean a cold night automatically breaks the camera. It does mean a setup that works comfortably during one season may benefit from a slightly different angle or sensitivity setting when conditions change.

If the nighttime picture is bad too

If the camera does record a nighttime event but the clip is dark, washed out, or difficult to recognize, motion detection may be working perfectly. That’s a video-quality problem instead.
