How to clean a Ring camera lens

💡 Need to know

  • Start dry. A clean microfiber cloth handles most dirt.
  • Never spray the camera. Moisture can work its way into seams.
  • Use a light touch. The lens cover can scratch more easily than you think.
  • Check after dark. Smears often show up most clearly in night vision.

A Ring™ camera lens spends its days facing fingerprints, pollen, dust, rain spots, spiderwebs, and the occasional bug with no respect for personal space. Over time, that buildup can make video look hazy, soft, streaky, or unusually bright at night.

Cleaning the lens is simple, but the safest method is also the least dramatic: very little moisture, no harsh cleaner, and no scrubbing. Here’s how Asurion Experts recommend cleaning a Ring camera without damaging it.

What you need to clean a Ring camera lens

✅ Gather:

  • A clean microfiber cloth
  • A soft, clean brush
  • A second dry microfiber cloth
  • A small amount of distilled water for stubborn spots
  • A stable step stool or ladder, if needed

🚫 Avoid:

  • Paper towels
  • Facial tissues
  • Abrasive sponges
  • Glass cleaner
  • Ammonia
  • Aerosol sprays
  • Soaking-wet wipes
  • Sharp tools
  • High-pressure air

The cloth should be free of grit. A dusty microfiber cloth can scratch the lens while pretending to help.

Turn off the camera before cleaning

If the camera has a removable battery, take it out before cleaning. For plug-in models, disconnect power when it is safe and practical.

For a hardwired camera or doorbell, avoid opening electrical parts. Surface cleaning does not require removing wiring or taking the device apart.

Brush away loose dirt first

Before wiping the lens, remove particles that could scratch it.

  1. Use a soft brush to loosen dust, pollen, or dried debris.
  2. Clear spiderwebs from the lens and nearby housing.
  3. Brush around the edges without pushing debris into seams.
  4. Check for any shipping or protective film still covering the camera.

Do not scrape dried spots with a fingernail, pin, or tool.

Wipe the lens with a dry microfiber cloth

Use a clean section of the cloth and wipe gently.

  1. Fold the cloth into a small, flat pad.
  2. Wipe the lens in light circles.
  3. Turn the cloth as it picks up dirt.
  4. Check the surface from another angle.
  5. Repeat only as needed.

Avoid pressing hard. More pressure does not make the lens surrender faster.

Use a barely damp cloth for stubborn spots

If a dry cloth cannot remove a water spot or stuck-on dirt:

  1. Lightly dampen one corner of the microfiber cloth with water.
  2. Make sure the cloth is not dripping.
  3. Wipe the spot gently.
  4. Keep moisture away from seams, speakers, buttons, and charging contacts.
  5. Dry the lens immediately with the second cloth.

Never spray water or cleaner directly onto the Ring camera.

Household glass cleaner may leave residue or damage coatings and nearby materials. The camera lens is not a tiny window, even when the streaks suggest otherwise.

Clean around the infrared lights and sensors

Night vision uses infrared light around or near the camera lens. Dirt, webs, or smears in that area can reflect the infrared light back toward the lens and create glare.

Gently wipe the surrounding front panel with the same dry microfiber cloth. Do not push into openings or attempt to remove the front cover.

If daytime video looks clear but nighttime footage is cloudy or washed out, the lens or infrared area probably needs another careful look.

Can dirt affect Ring motion detection?

A dirty lens mainly affects video clarity, but debris can still cause trouble around the camera.

Spiderwebs, insects, branches, or debris moving close to the device may trigger unwanted events. Heavy buildup or an obstruction in front of the camera can also make it harder to review what caused an alert.

After cleaning, use the Ring app to run a motion test. If detection is still inconsistent, our guide to adjusting Ring motion detection range can help with zones, sensitivity, and placement. If motion is still missing altogether, try our article on fixing a Ring camera that isn’t detecting motion.

Check the video after cleaning

Restore the battery or power, then wait for the camera to reconnect. Check:

  1. Live View during daylight.
  2. The edges of the image for haze.
  3. Night vision after dark.
  4. Motion detection in the main zone.
  5. Whether glare changes when outdoor lights turn on.

If the image remains blurry, inspect the lens cover for scratches, moisture inside the housing, or damage. Our broader guide to fixing a Ring doorbell that isn’t working can help rule out Wi-Fi, power, app, and camera problems.

FAQ

What can I use to clean a Ring camera lens?

Use a clean microfiber cloth. For a stubborn spot, use a barely damp corner of the cloth, then dry the lens immediately.

Can I use glass cleaner on a Ring camera?

It is safer not to. Glass cleaner can leave residue, affect coatings, or seep into seams. Water and microfiber are usually enough.

Why is my Ring video blurry after cleaning?

The cloth may have left a smear, or the lens cover may have scratches or internal condensation. Check it under daylight and night vision.

How often should a Ring camera lens be cleaned?

Clean it whenever video looks hazy, glare increases, or visible dirt builds up. Outdoor cameras may need attention more often during pollen, rain, or spider season.
