Oculus Quest 2 mic not working? Here's what to do

Oculus mic not working

⚡ Fast fix

  • No one can hear you? Check Settings > System > Sound and make sure the mic isn’t muted.
  • Fix permissions—In Privacy, make sure apps are allowed to use your microphone.
  • Give it a reset—Restart your Meta Quest headset—audio glitches happen.
  • Uninstall and reinstall the app—refreshing the Meta Horizon app on your device can help.

Are you having microphone issues with your Oculus Quest 2® (now known as Meta Quest)? If so, you know how they can ruin your immersive VR plans, whether you want to embark on a multiplayer adventure or a virtual meet-up with friends.

At Asurion, we make caring for your tech easy. From casting your Oculus (Meta) Quest® to your TV to repairing your headset—we’ve got you covered. Here’s our guide to fixing an Oculus Quest microphone that’s not working.

Restart your Oculus Quest 2

A good first troubleshooting step is to restart your Oculus Quest. This can often resolve temporary glitches affecting the microphone. Follow these steps to restart your Oculus headset:

  1. Press and hold the Power button on the right side of your headset.
  2. Select Restart and confirm. The headset will turn off and then turn back on.

Check for physical obstructions

Make sure no third-party face covers or "skins" are blocking the tiny pinhole mics (usually located near the bottom of the headset or near the nose).

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

Allow access to your microphone

Check your PC's privacy settings to make sure Oculus has access to your microphone. Without security approval from the Oculus headset, your mic won’t work. Follow these steps to make sure your microphone has access to your device:

  1. On your PC, go to Settings.
  2. Select Privacy > Microphone.
  3. Turn on “Allow apps to access your microphone.” Then scroll down to the list of apps and make sure that Oculus has access to the microphone.

Check app permissions

If the mic works in some games but not others, go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, find the specific game, and make sure Microphone Permissions are toggled ON.

Update the audio drivers

Make sure your PC's audio drivers are up-to-date, as outdated drivers can lead to microphone issues. Here’s how:

  1. In your PC’s taskbar search box, type “device manager," then select Device Manager when it appears.
  2. Find and select Audio inputs and outputs.
  3. Right-click on your audio driver.
  4. Select Update driver then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update.

Adjust the sound settings

Take a look at the sound settings on your Oculus Quest 2 and make sure that the microphone is selected and properly configured.

  1. On the headset, press the Meta button to open the Navigator.
  2. Select Quick Controls (the clock/battery area).
  3. Go to Settings (gear icon) > System > Audio.

Pro tip: You can now also find a Mute/Unmute shortcut directly in the Quick Controls panel without digging into the full Settings menu.

Reinstall the app

If the problem persists, try reinstalling the Meta Horizon app on your device. A fresh install can often fix bugs affecting the microphone.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Why isn’t my Oculus mic working?

Usually it’s muted settings, missing permissions, or a temporary software glitch.

How do I fix my Oculus mic?

Check mic settings, allow permissions, and restart your headset. That solves most issues.

Where are microphone settings on Meta Quest?

Go to Settings > System > Sound to check input settings.

Why does my mic work in some apps but not others?

That app may not have permission to use your microphone—check your privacy settings.

Can a headset or accessory affect the mic?

Yes. External headsets or mics can override the built-in mic or cause conflicts.
