How long does an iPad last?

Woman using her iPad

💡 Need to know

  • Most iPads outlast phones: A well-cared-for iPad can stay useful for 5–8 years or more before performance becomes a problem.
  • The battery usually ages first: If your iPad still works fine but dies quickly, a battery replacement may buy you several more years.
  • Software support matters: Once an iPad stops receiving iPadOS updates, you'll eventually run into app compatibility and security issues.
  • Slow doesn't always mean old: Low storage, outdated software, and worn batteries can make an otherwise healthy iPad feel past its prime.

Your iPad® is convenient and versatile, especially when you want to play games, watch movies, or work on the go. But if you've had yours for a while, you may be wondering how much life it has left. The answer depends largely on how you use and take care of your tablet.

At uBreakiFix® by Asurion, we help you get the most from the tech you love. Here's everything you need to know about your iPad's lifespan, including ways you can make your tablet last longer.

How long will an iPad last?

Your iPad should last at least 5 years. But your device's exact lifespan depends heavily on:

  • Your iPad model. An iPad Pro or iPad Air powered by an Apple Silicon M-series chip will remain functional and lightning-fast for significantly more years than a standard entry-level A-series iPad.
  • How you use it and what you use it for. If you use your tablet daily for demanding workloads—like 3D gaming, rendering high-definition video files, or compiling heavy graphic design files—the internal hardware and battery will naturally degrade faster than an iPad used purely for reading or streaming.
  • How frequently you maintain it. Keeping up with official iPadOS software updates, clearing out cached storage files, and using a high-quality protective case will drastically extend its usable lifetime.

How many years does an iPad battery last?

The lithium-ion battery inside your iPad usually lasts about 2 to 3 years.

How you manage your recharge cycles directly impacts this timeline. Exposing your iPad to extreme environmental temperatures (over 95°F or 35°C)—such as leaving it on a sunny car dashboard—permanently degrades the chemical cells, causing the battery to drain rapidly or overheat. Luckily, a fading battery doesn't mean you need a whole new tablet; replacing an iPad battery is a simple repair that can add years back to your current device.

How long does Apple support iPads?

On average, Apple provides software updates for 5–7 years. But every time the company launches a new operating system, it stops supporting some of the older models.

The active operating system, iPadOS 26, officially dropped support for older entry-level devices like the iPad 7th Generation. To run modern software safely, your tablet needs to be an iPad 8th Generation or newer, an iPad mini 5th Generation or newer, an iPad Air 3rd Generation or newer, or any iPad Pro model from 2018 or later.

Signs it's time to replace your iPad

If you've had your iPad for a while but it works perfectly, hang on to it. But if your tablet's nearing the 5-year-or-older mark, watch out for these signs it may be time to replace it.

Your iPad screen is damaged

Sometimes you can live with a tiny blemish on your screen, but cracks and scratches on your iPad will only continue to get worse. They make your device more vulnerable to damage from liquid and dirt and, not to mention, can lead to cuts on your fingers. Depending on the severity of the crack, an iPad screen replacement may be the answer. If the LCD behind your screen is also damaged, leading to dead pixels, replacement could be your best option.

You can't update to the latest operating system

The latest iPadOS® gives you important security updates and new features. So updating your operating system regularly is crucial.

If you have an older iPad, it's possible your device may not support the latest operating system updates. To check if your tablet is eligible, visit the Apple® support page.

The apps on your iPad keep crashing

One day Netflix opens instantly. The next, it's spinning its wheels while you stare at a loading screen. As apps like Netflix, Roblox, and Microsoft 365 get bigger and more powerful, older iPads can start showing their age. Frequent crashes, freezes, and slow loading times are often signs that your device is struggling to handle modern apps.

Your iPad won't connect to mobile or Wi-Fi networks

If you have an older cellular iPad, there's a chance it was built for 3G networks—which have largely ridden off into the sunset. That means mobile data may not work anymore, even if the rest of the iPad seems fine. If staying connected on the go is important, newer models like the iPad Air or iPad Pro offer much faster and more reliable 5G connectivity, so you're not hunting for Wi-Fi every time you leave the house.

If you can't get on the local Wi-Fi network with your tablet, there may be an easy fix. Check out our guide to what to do if your iPad won't connect to Wi-Fi.

The battery on your iPad doesn't last

If your battery power is dwindling, that doesn't necessarily mean you need a new iPad. But it could be a sign you'll need to replace your device's battery soon. How do you know for sure?

Most newer iPads can last 6-8 hours on battery power, according to Apple. It could last even longer if you optimize your settings. If yours isn't lasting that long, consider contacting an expert to replace your battery.

If you've previously replaced your iPad battery and it's running out of juice, it's probably time to upgrade your device.

Your iPad keeps running out of space

Apps, games, and videos have gotten a lot hungrier over the years. While tricks like moving photos to iCloud or offloading unused apps can buy you some breathing room, a 32GB or 64GB iPad can fill up surprisingly fast.

Newer iPads start with much more storage, and some models offer up to 2TB—enough room for years of photos, massive project files, and enough downloaded movies to survive even the longest flight delays.

Your iPad is slow

If your keyboard can't seem to keep up with your typing or switching between apps feels like waiting for a traffic light to change, your iPad may be showing its age. Newer models powered by Apple Silicon chips like the M1, M2, or M4 are dramatically faster, making everything from web browsing to multitasking feel smoother and more responsive.

You're missing the latest tablet features

Cool new features are the highlight of every iPad release, and FOMO is real. If you have an older model and just can't quit thinking about things you don't have—like an Apple Pencil®, FaceID®, or 5G mobile data—it may be time to upgrade your device.

If you're ready to upgrade, it's also a good time to think about protecting your new iPad before the first drop, spill, or cracked screen has a chance to happen.
