How to make your Steam Deck battery last longer

Steam Deck battery life

⚡ Fast fix

  • Battery draining in under two hours? Lowering screen brightness and refresh rate can make a bigger difference than you'd think.
  • Playing indie games? Many don't need full performance mode, so limiting frame rates can stretch battery life significantly.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth always on? Turn off what you're not using—every little bit helps on long gaming sessions.
  • Fans working overtime? Heat and battery life go hand in hand, so keeping your Steam Deck cool can help it run longer.

Your Steam Deck™ offers thousands of games—with console-like quality—in the palm of your hand. It's what makes this gaming system a must when you're hopping on a plane or waiting around in the doctor's office. The only problem: Its battery can drain really fast.

Looking to get more playtime out of a single charge? We can help. At Asurion, we take care of your tech so you can enjoy the devices that run your world. Here's how to extend your Steam Deck's battery life.

Change your settings to extend your Steam Deck's battery life

Depending on your settings or the games you're playing, your Steam Deck can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours on a single charge. Follow these simple steps to get more out of each charge and stay at the higher end of that range.

Adjust the brightness

If you're looking to learn how to increase battery life on the Steam Deck, start by lowering your brightness by roughly 50% if you can. The screen eats up power, so if you're gaming in a dimly-lit room, turning down the brightness can save your battery.

  1. Press the Steam button on the left of your device.
  2. Go to Settings > Display, then adjust the brightness.

You can also turn on adaptive brightness, which means your device will automatically lower the brightness when it senses low light, preserving battery life.

  1. Press the Steam button on the left of your device.
  2. Go to Settings > Display.
  3. Toggle Enable Adaptive Brightness to on.

Adjust the frame rate

If you're chasing battery life, uncapped frame rates are usually the first thing to rein in. Running at 60 or 90 FPS forces your Steam Deck to work harder than many games actually need.

  • Press the three-dot (...) button to open the Quick Access Menu.
  • Select the Performance tab (the battery icon).
  • Find Frame Rate Limit and lower it to 40 FPS or 30 FPS.

For a lot of games, especially slower-paced titles, you'll barely notice the difference. Your battery, on the other hand, definitely will.

Don’t ditch it, fix it

No matter the issue, our experts can repair your devices fast. Make an appointment or visit your local uBreakiFix by Asurion today.

Turn down the power limit

Not every game needs your Steam Deck running flat-out. If you're playing indie games, older titles, or retro emulators, lowering the power limit can add serious playtime.

  1. Open the Performance menu.
  2. Turn on TDP Limit.
  3. Lower the wattage to 6W–8W and see how the game feels.

Think of it like switching from a sports car to cruise control. If the game starts stuttering or audio gets crackly, bump the wattage up a notch until everything runs smoothly.

Use Half-Rate Shading

Battery at 12% and you're nowhere near a checkpoint? This setting can help squeeze out a little extra playtime.

  1. Open the Performance menu.
  2. Turn on Half-Rate Shading.

It reduces the graphics workload, which can help battery life in demanding games. The tradeoff is that menus and text may look a little softer—but sometimes getting to that next save point is worth it.

Stop wasting battery on things you're not using

Your Steam Deck is constantly looking for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections in the background. If you're playing offline, there's no reason to let those radios keep working overtime.

Flying, commuting, or playing solo? Turn on Airplane Mode from the Quick Access Menu to disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Use Desktop Mode often? Before jumping back into Gaming Mode, close apps like Discord, Spotify, or web browsers. Otherwise, they can keep quietly nibbling away at your battery in the background.

Recalibrate your battery

If your Steam Deck says 50% one minute and 5% the next—or shuts down while claiming it still has plenty of charge—the battery gauge may need a check.

  1. Unplug the charger and play until the Steam Deck completely powers off.
  2. Connect the official charger.
  3. Let it charge all the way back to 100% while powered off.
  4. Leave it alone until the charge is finished.

This helps the system relearn what "empty" and "full" actually look like, making battery percentage readings more accurate. Think of it as a reset for the battery meter, not the battery itself.

Change the way you use your Steam Deck to boost your battery life

Some battery-saving tricks take a few seconds to set up. Others are just about being strategic with how you play. Here are a few easy ways to stretch your Steam Deck's battery without making gaming feel like a compromise.

Play less demanding games when you're away from an outlet

Not all games treat your battery equally. A graphically intense game like Cyberpunk 2077 or Elden Ring asks a lot from the Steam Deck's hardware, which means the battery drains much faster. On the other hand, indie games, retro titles, and 2D favorites like Hades, Dead Cells, and Cuphead can often run for hours longer on the same charge.

If you're facing a long flight, road trip, or commute, your game choice can make just as much difference as any setting adjustment.

Use AMD FSR

One of the smartest battery-saving features on the Steam Deck is AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). In simple terms, FSR lets your Steam Deck render a game at a lower resolution—which requires less power—then intelligently sharpens the image so it still looks good on the screen.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Launch your game and open its graphics settings.
  2. Change the display mode to Windowed or Borderless Windowed.
  3. Lower the game's resolution to something like 1024×640 or 960×600.
  4. Press the three-dot (...) button to open the Quick Access Menu.
  5. Open the Performance tab and switch to Advanced View.
  6. Scroll to Scaling Filter and select FSR.

The result? Your Steam Deck has fewer pixels to render, which means less work for the GPU and more time spent gaming before you need a charger.

Put your Steam Deck into Battery Storage Mode

Not using your Steam Deck for a while? Don't just toss it in a drawer and forget about it. Battery Storage Mode helps protect the battery during long periods of inactivity and can reduce long-term wear.

Before enabling it, charge or discharge the battery to around 40–50%. Then:

  1. Shut down the Steam Deck completely.
  2. Hold Volume (+) and press the Power button.
  3. When the BIOS screen appears, select Setup Utility.
  4. Open the Power menu.
  5. Select Battery Storage Mode and confirm.

The Steam Deck will power off and enter storage mode. When you're ready to use it again, simply plug it into the charger before turning it on.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

How long does the Steam Deck battery last on a full charge?

A Steam Deck battery will last an average of 2 hours if you keep the default settings. But you can get as much as 8 hours of gameplay out of it on a single charge depending on how you tweak your settings or use your console.

How can I check the battery percentage on the Steam Deck?

  1. Press the Steam button on the left of your device.
  2. Go to Settings > General.
  3. Using the A button, toggle Battery Percentage on.

Can I replace the battery in the Steam Deck?

You can, but this kind of repair is better left to the pros. Contact a game console repair expert for help. It's the smart thing to do to make sure your new battery is installed correctly and keeps your Steam Deck running for a long time.

What are the recommended power settings for optimal battery life?

It depends on what type of game you're playing. Complex games will require 15 watts, but others less so. We recommend experimenting depending on the game.

Can I charge the Steam Deck while playing games?

Yes, it's safe for you to play games on your device while it charges.

Is it better to use a power bank or a docking station for extended gameplay?

Whether you use a docking station or a power bank to extend your play time, you want to make sure that it can provide 45 watts of power to charge your Steam Deck effectively. Anything less would not provide enough power to keep your console running while charging.

What should I do if my Steam Deck battery is draining unusually fast?

If the Steam Deck battery is draining quickly, schedule an appointment with one of our game console repair experts.

Is there a warranty for the Steam Deck battery?

The Steam Deck comes with a one-year, limited warranty. For more details, check out Valve's website. For information on additional protection for your Steam Deck plus all of your other favorite home tech like your laptop and TV with one simple plan, learn more about Asurion Tech Care.
