Tighten the motion zone first

Open the Ring app, select the camera or doorbell, and go to Motion Settings > Motion Zones. Look at what the current zone includes, especially around its edges.

Lower sensitivity a little at a time

Once the zone covers the right area, adjust Motion Sensitivity gradually. Dropping it too far all at once can trade constant alerts for missed motion, which isn’t much of an upgrade.

Make one change, live with it for a day or two, and see what Ring catches. A front door facing a quiet porch can usually use different settings than a camera pointed toward a busy driveway.

Let Smart Alerts do some filtering

On compatible Ring devices with a compatible subscription, Smart Alerts can separate types of motion instead of treating everything the same. Depending on the device, options may include people, packages, vehicles, and other motion.

Go to Motion Settings > Smart Alerts and choose which events should record, notify you, or both. If cars are the problem, for example, filtering by event type can be much cleaner than shrinking the motion zone until half the driveway disappears.

Use schedules when the annoying alerts are predictable

If the camera only drives you crazy at the same time every day—school pickup, trash collection, the dog walker’s usual route—changing the entire motion setup may be overkill.

Motion Schedules can suppress alerts during planned time windows. For a shorter break, Alerts Snooze temporarily quiets Motion Alerts while leaving the device available; on eligible subscribed setups, recording can continue during the snooze.

That makes more sense than turning Motion Detection off and forgetting to turn it back on.

Look at what keeps setting the camera off

Open Event History and check a handful of the alerts you didn’t want. Patterns usually show up pretty quickly.

Spiderwebs close to the lens, headlights, moving shadows, blowing plants, insects, rain, and a camera aimed too close to a busy public area can all create extra motion events. If the alerts suddenly increased after months of normal behavior, it’s worth checking the lens and camera angle before changing every setting in the app.
