What to do when your Amazon Smart Plug won’t turn on a lamp
⚡ Fast fix
- Test the lamp first—Plug it straight into the wall and make sure it works.
- Leave the lamp switch on—The Smart Plug can’t override an off switch.
- Press the plug’s button—If that works, focus on Alexa or the routine.

Alexa® says the lamp is on. The Alexa app agrees. Meanwhile, the room is still dark.
Before blaming Wi-Fi or Alexa, start with the much less exciting question: can electricity actually make it from the outlet, through the Amazon® Smart Plug, and into the lamp? At Asurion, our experts know that sometimes the smartest troubleshooting starts with the simplest stuff. Here's how we'd follow the power and find where it stops.
Start with the lamp and outlet
Take the Smart Plug out of the equation for a minute. Plug the lamp directly into the same wall outlet, switch it on, and see what happens.
No light? Try another small device, such as a phone charger, in that outlet. If the outlet works, check the bulb, lamp cord, and switch next.
If the lamp works normally when it's plugged straight into the wall, leave its physical switch in the On position and reconnect the Smart Plug. That's important because the plug can control whether the lamp receives electricity, but it can't physically flip the lamp's own switch. Someone turning the lamp off by hand can leave Alexa confidently controlling an outlet attached to a lamp that's still switched off.
See what happens when you press the Smart Plug button
Now press the physical button on the side of the Smart Plug. If the lamp comes on, you've got power all the way through the setup and can leave the bulb, outlet, and cord alone.
Move over to the Alexa app and open Devices > Plugs. Select the Smart Plug and tap its on/off control.
If the lamp responds in the app but ignores voice commands, check the plug's name. Alexa has a much easier time with Living Room Lamp when that's also what you're calling it. If voice control works but an Alexa Routine doesn't, open the routine and make sure the correct plug and Power On action are still included.
Our guide to setting up an Amazon Smart Plug with Alexa covers naming, voice control, and routines if that side of the setup needs a refresh.
What if the Smart Plug button does nothing?
When the lamp works directly from the outlet but pressing the Smart Plug's button can't turn it on, check the plug in Alexa. If it's offline or unresponsive there too, the problem has moved pretty squarely to the Smart Plug.
Our article on fixing an Amazon Smart Plug that isn't responding walks through the Wi-Fi and connection troubleshooting from there.
Before resetting anything, though, there's one more test worth doing—especially if the plug itself seems to switch on normally.
Some lamps just aren't great Smart Plug partners
Touch lamps and models with electronic power buttons don't always turn themselves back on when electricity returns.
You can test yours without Alexa at all. Turn the lamp on, unplug it from the wall for a few seconds, then plug it directly back in without touching its controls.
If it lights up again on its own, a Smart Plug should be able to control it. If the lamp stays dark until you press its button or touch it, the Smart Plug can restore electricity all day long and the lamp will still be waiting for that second command.
Nothing is necessarily broken in that situation. The lamp simply doesn't remember its On state after losing power, which makes it a poor match for basic smart-plug control.
Reset the Smart Plug only when the plug is the problem
If you've reached this point and the lamp and outlet work normally but the Smart Plug itself won't respond from either its physical button or Alexa, then a reset makes sense.
- Hold the Smart Plug's side button for about 12 seconds.
- Release it when the LED turns red.
- Wait for the blue light to blink.
- Add the Smart Plug again in the Alexa app.
- Test the lamp before rebuilding any routines.
Resetting removes the plug's current setup, so you'll need to reconnect it afterward. That's why we'd save it for a Smart Plug that's actually stuck—not use it as the opening move because Alexa and a lamp are having a disagreement.

FAQ
Why won’t my Smart Plug turn on my lamp?
Test the lamp directly in the outlet first. If it works, make sure the lamp’s physical switch is left on and test the Smart Plug’s side button.
Does the lamp switch need to stay on with a Smart Plug?
Yes, for a standard switched lamp. The Smart Plug controls electricity to the lamp but can’t flip the lamp’s own switch.
Why does the Smart Plug click but the lamp stays off?
The lamp may be switched off, the bulb may be bad, or the lamp may use an electronic control that doesn’t turn back on automatically after power is restored.
Why does the lamp work from the Smart Plug button but not Alexa?
That points away from the lamp and outlet. Check the plug’s Alexa device entry, name, connection, and any routine you’re using.
Can every lamp work with a Smart Plug?
Nope. Simple on/off lamps are the easiest match. Lamps that require a touch or electronic button after losing power may not turn back on when the Smart Plug restores electricity.
