Verizon Wireless voicemail setup: how to set up Visual Voicemail

If you’re new to Verizon Wireless and setting up voicemail for the first time, you have two options: traditional voicemail (dialing *86) or Visual Voicemail. Traditional voicemail lets you call in and listen to messages, while Verizon Visual Voicemail makes it easier by showing your voicemails right on your phone screen.

Here’s how to set up Verizon Wireless voicemail and get started with Visual Voicemail.

How to set up Verizon Wireless voicemail

Before you can use Visual Voicemail, you’ll need to make sure basic voicemail is set up:

  1. Dial *86 from your Verizon phone.
  2. Follow the prompts to create a password (4–7 digits).
  3. Record a personal greeting.

Once this is complete, you’ll be able to check voicemail by dialing *86 or by enabling Visual Voicemail on your iPhone or Android.

What is Verizon Visual Voicemail?

Visual Voicemail is a feature available on many Verizon iPhone and Android devices. Instead of dialing in to listen to messages, Visual Voicemail lets you:

  • Read a list of voicemails in your Phone app.
  • See caller details like number, date, and time.
  • Play, delete, or save messages with a tap.
  • Read text transcriptions (if supported on your device).

How to set up Verizon Visual Voicemail on iPhone

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap the Voicemail tab in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Follow the prompts to create a voicemail password and greeting if you haven’t already.
  4. Once set up, your voicemails will appear in a list you can manage directly on your iPhone.

How to set up Verizon Visual Voicemail on Android

Steps may vary by device, but generally:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap Voicemail.
  3. Follow the prompts to set up your password and greeting, if it’s your first time.
  4. Once activated, your messages will show in a list you can play, delete, or save.

If you don’t see a voicemail tab, you may need to download the Verizon Visual Voicemail app from the Google Play Store.

Troubleshooting Verizon Visual Voicemail

If Visual Voicemail isn’t working:

  • Restart your phone.
  • Make sure cellular data is on—Visual Voicemail needs a data connection.
  • Update your phone’s software.
  • Dial *86 to confirm your voicemail is set up.
  • Contact Verizon at *611 or 1-800-922-0204 if the problem continues.
